Men’s Basketball Suffers Opening Round Loss In CCC Quarters

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The third-seeded Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team was ousted from the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament Tuesday evening, falling 83-78 to the #6 seed Eastern Nazarene College.

Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) kicked off the game with a three-pointer for Roger Williams before Josh Rice (Hanson, Mass.) later drained a trey for a 5-4 Lion lead.

The two sides alternated the lead multiple times over the first ten minutes, with neither side up by more than a possession. The tide began to turn in the Hawks' favor at the 10:42 mark. O'Brien laid in a basket to give RWU a 17-16 lead. His shot would spark an 8-0 run for the Hawks to give the team a 23-16 advantage with 8:50 left in the half.

Eastern Nazarene would not be deterred, pulling their way back in the game over the next three minutes. The Lions countered with a 9-2 run to tie the game back at 25. Both teams traded buckets over the remainder of the half, with Corey Doran (Fairfield, Calif.) getting the final layup to give ENC a 35-33 lead going into halftime.

Roger Williams took its first lead of the period on an O'Brien three-pointer on RWU's second possession, making it a 38-37 game. Eastern Nazarene would roll off seven straight points to regain the lead, then later took their largest lead of the game with 10:25 left. Doran completed a three-point play to make it a 61-50 game in favor of the visitors.

From there, the Hawks could not get the timely baskets to make a run back into the game. The Lions would not allow Roger Williams to come close than five over the rest of the game.

RWU had a great chance to try to cut a six-point deficit in half in the final minute. After forcing a turnover off of the full court press, RWU failed to knock down the ensuing three-point attempt. The Lions would then hit six of their final eight shots at the foul line to hold on for the win.

ENC's Christian Lynch (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored 23 in the first half and finished with a game high 35. Doran had 16 points and six rebounds, with Rice adding 15 points and five assists.

Marini led Roger Williams with 20 points and five assists. Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) scored 13, while Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) went for 11 points and seven rebounds and O'Brien added 11 and eight.

Eastern Nazarene (13-13) heads to #2 Endicott Thursday evening in the CCC Semifinal, while Roger Williams ends the year at 20-6.
