Women’s Volleyball Wins Two in Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team opened their season Friday night in Bristol, R.I. with two victories over Framingham State University (25-17, 26-24, 25-22) and Emerson College (25-17, 25-19, 25-16).

The Hawks, who were ranked second in the Commonwealth Coast Conference preseason coaches' poll, are hosts to the season's opening volleyball invitational.

The Hawks showed their offensive power in the first set against the Framingham State University Rams with 11 kills. Middle hitter Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) led the first set with four kills and both Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) and Grace Kenningham (Houston, Texas) had three. Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) served two aces in the opening set. The Rams retaliated in the second set and gained nearly a double-digit lead but could not get past a pesky 22 points. The Hawks rallied back, tied the set and completed the comeback with a 26-24 win. Similar trends were seen in the third set with the Hawks continuously fighting to stay close to the Rams. The Hawks eventually took the lead and closed the third and final set with a score of 25-22.

The Hawks continued their dominance in the second match against the Emerson College Lions. The Hawks pulled away early in the first set after multiple attack errors by the Lions. The first set went in favor of the Hawks, 25-17. While the Lions were able to keep the second and third sets interesting, they could not quite get a rhythm going. The Lions, plagued by inconsistent attack attempts, dropped the second and third sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-16. The Lions dropped to 1-1 while the Hawks remain undefeated.

LoIacono led the Hawks with 12 kills on 20 total attempts and Quilty had six kills and two blocks. Fallisi had a strong overall match with seven kills, three service aces, and 12 digs.

The Hawks (2-0) look to add two more wins to their record Saturday afternoon as they face off against Bridgewater State University and Colby-Sawyer College in the final day of the RWU Invitational.
