Women’s Volleyball Stays Perfect

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team remained undefeated Saturday after two wins in Bristol against Bridgewater State University (25-12, 25-23, 25-8) and Colby-Sawyer College (25-22, 25-14, 25-15).

The Hawks faced the 0-2 Bridgewater State University Bears in their first game of the day. The Hawks came out strong with a 9-0 run to start the first set behind Nicki Fallisi's (Salem, N.H.) killer serve. Combined with stellar defense and carefully located kills, the Hawks were able to cruise through the first set by a score of 25-12.

The second set win did not come as easy for the Hawks as they had some issues with ball handling early, but the Bears struggled as well. Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Grace Kenningham (Houston, Texas) helped push the Hawks to their 25-23 win with six kills in set two. LoIacono closed the set with her eighth kill of the match.

LoIacono opened the third set with her ninth kill of the match. The Hawks kept their play clean and limited errors which allowed them to take a 10-point lead early in the set and maintain it throughout the final set. The Hawks took the third set and the match by a score of 25-8.

The Hawks' second match was against the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers, whom entered Saturday's final game with a 1-1 record. The first set was back-and-forth as both teams hit the ball strong, making it difficult for either team to defend. Fallisi led the first set with five kills, including the winning point for the Hawks. The final set score was 25-22.

Fallisi's serving at the beginning of the second set quickly led the Chargers to call a timeout as they were down 6-0. The Hawks did not allow the Chargers to gain momentum throughout the second set, despite a few service errors. The Hawks kept control and took the second set, 25-14.

The Hawks looked to complete their perfect weekend in the third set. The Hawks' outside hitters connected with the ball well which kept the Chargers from closing the deficit. The Hawks took their 12th and final set of a four-match weekend by a score of 25-15.

LoIacono and Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.) each had seven kills in the match and Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) had three blocks. Fallisi and Kenningham led the team with four service aces each.

The Hawks will travel September 8 and 9 to Cambridge, Mass. for the MIT Invitational in which they will play three matches and hope to keep their winning streak going.
