WPI Defeats Women’s Soccer In Overtime

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – WPI used an early goal in overtime to down the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team 2-1 Monday night in Alumni Stadium.

Senior Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) and sophomore Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) teamed up to score the game-ending goal at 92:40.

Gomarlo notched her sixth goal of the year when she received a pass from McCrea and fired off a shot that caromed off the keeper. Earlier in the game, McCrea brought the ball down the field and used a nifty move to get past the defender before depositing her fifth of the year at 51:58.

The Hawks later netted the equalizer with a free kick by Woznicki that was redirected by sophomore Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, MA) and buried by sophomore Kayla Larosa (Newington, CT) in the 66th minute.

In the 35th minute, freshman Jenna Hirshfeld (Reston, VA) sent the ball between a pair of Hawks to McCrea who eluded a defender only to have the bid go high. Later in the half, McCrea had a solid one-on-one chance but it went just right.

Senior Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, CT) took aim at WPI junior goalkeeper Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT), as did junior Jenny Nasser (Beverly, MA) early in the 21st minute. RWU senior backstop Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, MA) was tested by junior Juliana Cabello (Smithtown, NY) just 3:40 into the contest.

In all, Donovan (2-4-2) ended up making nine stops as Hoops (3-2) halted three.

WPI had the 16-11 advantage in shots with the difference all occurring in the second half. The Engineers were also awarded three of the five corner kicks, including a 2-0 advantage in the second 45 minute segment.

"We put in an excellent shift tonight, an excellent team performance but unfortunately nothing to show for it in the win column," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We were very good from the back to the front, we were on our game and showed we can compete and play our style of soccer against any team in the country any day of the week.

"We attacked in packs and were able to move the ball with speed, playing with a good tempo. It was a good game to watch and be a part of despite score line. We are continuing to raise our game and are moving in the right direction.

"We are defending better, limiting our opposition to only a few chances in front of goal as well creating more clear-cut opportunities at the other end.

"This game should help us achieve results later on this week and for the rest of the season!"

Women's Soccer (6-4) hits the road for a 2pm NEWMAC match at Smith on Saturday. RWU (3-5-2) continues a three-game road trip Wednesday at 4pm versus Framingham State.
