Box Score NEWTON, Mass. – For the first eighty-two minutes, Mount Ida College and Roger Williams University played to a scoreless draw, but a flurry of activity in the dying stages of play saw the visiting Hawks come away with a 2-1 win in non-conference soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Roger Williams (2-0-1) took a 2-0 lead with goals at 82:56 and 89:00 before the Mustangs cut the deficit in half, but with just thirty seconds left to play.
Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) scored his second goal of the year, converting a penalty kick for the home team, but Roger Williams led 20-9 in shots and benefited from an own goal to break the scoreless tie.
With just over seven minutes left, a loose header by the Mount Ida defense sailed over the head of senior goalie Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.), who made eight saves between the pipes.
It looked as though there would only be one goal in a game that was tightly contested throughout, but the Hawks doubled their advantage with a minute left when
Stathi Panagiotidis (Norwalk, Conn.) got in behind the defense and beat Ford far post.
Panagiotidis, who was played in by
Hunter Graham (North Yarmouth, Maine), earned his first goal of the year and helped secure the win for Roger Williams and sophomore goalie
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.), who made three stops.
Mount Ida (1-2) is off until Monday, September 11th when they host Wheelock in a 6:00 pm non-conference tilt.
Roger Williams travels to another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) school on Saturday, a 1:00 pm game in Boston against Emmanuel.
