Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team fell short in its search for the team's first win of the season, falling 1-2 to Connecticut College in overtime Wednesday evening.
Connecticut College put a scare into the Hawks early on with a couple of close calls. Michelle Medina (Hartford, Conn.) had a shot from close range that just sailed wide left two minutes in. Then Zoe Stublarec (Rockfall, Conn.) tapped a shot from five yards away but hit it directly at Hawk keeper
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.).
The Hawks soon answered with their first goal of the game. In the sixth minute,
Morgan Snow (Rowley, Mass.) grabbed a loose ball from the left side and passed it to
Carly Quinn (Danielson, Conn.) from about 20 yards out in the middle. She put up a shot that wrapped around a group of players and slipped into the right corner of the goal for a 1-0 RWU lead.
On the ensuing Camel possession, Caroline Kelleher (Holden, Mass.) almost tied the game up if not for a heads-up defensive play. She was able to get behind O'Donovan and had a clear look on net, but
Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) was able to get in front of the ball and deflect it out of harm's way.
For the rest of the half, Connecticut College did a good job preventing the Hawks from getting their offense in gear, as the Camels only allowed one more shot of the rest of the period. RWU's defense also fared well over the same stretch, keeping Conn. College to only five shots.
In the second half, the Camels managed to come through with the game-tying goal in the 63
rd minute. Livi Block (New York, N.Y.) sent up a pass to Medina, who was able to hold off a Hawk defender and get to the ball before the keeper could snag it. She would chip it over the goalie and into the center of the net, tying the game at one.
Both teams would play at a hard-nosed pace over the course of the half, but neither squad was able to notch another goal by the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, a Hawk foul with just under seven minutes to play led to a free kick from just outside the box. Maxie Johnson (Redding, Conn.) served up a shot off of the crossbar that bounced back towards Alexa Tribelli (Cranston, R.I.). She put up a shot directly at O'Donovan who stopped it, but the ball bounced towards Alyssa Kogelmann (Slingerlands, N.Y.) who converted the game winner.
Katy Pelletier (Topsfield, Mass.) recorded three saves in the win in relief of Sarah Williams (Sherborn, Mass.). O'Donovan made five saves on the night.
"We played very well today against a very talented team who are expected to do very well in the NESCAC," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. I think we matched them in a lot of different areas.
Carly Quinn scored with a great strike from 30 yards out into the bottom far corner and I felt that was going to be the winner even though it was early in the game. We were able to keep them from creating too much or being too dangerous in front of our goal. We were very comfortable and managed the game extremely well in the first half and most of the second half.
"Unfortunately an individual mistake and a bit of bad luck changed the outcome of the game, but overall we played our part in an enjoyable game from two teams that like to play soccer. We held our own and perhaps on another day come away with the win. We showed that we are not far away from being ranked in New England again. We have quality in depth and even with four players unavailable for selection we produced some good moments at both ends of the pitch!
"Going forward we need to be more clinical in the final third and take the opportunities we create and stay focused for 90 minutes or longer if we go into overtime as we often do."
On Saturday, Roger Williams (0-3-0) will host UMass-Boston while Connecticut College (1-0-0) heads to Middlebury.
