Gordon Pushes Past Men’s Basketball

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team could not complete the comeback against Gordon College, as the Hawks fell 87-84 Tuesday evening.
 
Gordon started with the first bucket of the game by Jaren Yang (San Francisco, Calif.) followed by a three pointer by Eric Demers (Acushnet, Mass.). RWU got on the board with a layup by Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) for the first points for RWU. A fast paced game between Roger Williams and Gordon ended up with Gordon leading 19-8.
 
Demers hits another shot to put Gordon up 21-9 followed by Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) with his second three to keep the Hawks in the game. RWU A layup by Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) brought the Hawks within eight with 7:19 left in the first half. A great dish from Demers to Noah Szilagyi (Highland Ranch, Colo.) put Gordon up 32-20 with 5:35 left in the quarter. Jaren Yang got to the basket with a fancy spin move to put Gordon up 42-31. Jake Haar (Huntington Beach.) would end the half with a buzzer-beater three pointer to put Gordon up 45-31.
 
Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) helped keep the Hawks in the game with a three-point play at 16:21 to bring RWU within 12. O'Brien scored  a three pointer, then grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed the ball down the court for a big one handed jam, making it a nine-point game.
The Hawks showed great defense, with an assist by Marini to Jennings for the three to tie the game 54-54 with 12:52 left in the half. Marini then drove hard to the basket for a free-throw to put the Hawks up by one.
The game would be back and forth, with Coene eventually knocking down a three to put the Hawks up by three with 4:00 left in the second half. Gordon trailed 79-75 with 2:29 left, but rolled off an 8-2 run with Demers hitting a big three to put the Fighting Scots up 83-81.
 
With only 12.7 seconds left, a foul sent Demers to the line for free throws. He missed the first of a one-and-one but Duvivier came up with the big rebound to go back to the line for one-one with 11.4 seconds left. Duvivier made the first free throw putting Gordon up 84-81 with 9.5 seconds left, followed by Matt Valles (Mattapoisett, Mass.) hitting a clutch free throw to put Gordon up by four. RWU would not be able to erase Gordon's lead and the Fighting Scots held on.
 
O'Brien finished with 34 points and nine rebounds, along with Heaton and Coene each scoring 13. Gordon forward Duvivier finished with a double-double, going for 28 points and 18 rebound, along with Demers' 20-point game.
 
 
RWU will host Nichols on Thursday at 7:30pm. Gordon's next game will be at Western New England Thursday at 7:30pm.
