Wentworth Gets Win Over Men’s Basketball

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team fell short and could not complete the comeback against Wentworth Institute of Technology as the Hawks fell 66-60.
 
Wentworth opened with the first basket by Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.). After a slow start, Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) came up with a strong drive to the basket to put the Hawks on the board. Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) later hit a jump shot to make the score 9-6., then O'Brien scored a fast-break bucket to cut the lead to five. JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn) would eventually tie the game at 16 with a three-pointer.
 
Another three by Pfohl would put the Hawks up 24-18 with 9:11 left on the clock. Wentworth would come back. Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) drove strong to the basket for two, then Cesar Fulcar (Watertown, Mass.) had good footwork to put Wentworth within two. Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) later knocked down a three-pointer to put Wentworth up 28-24.
 
Marini later made his way to the free throw line and made both to bring the Hawks within four, but Ganley with the hot hand knocked down a three pointer with 3:34 left in the first half to keep Wentworth's lead at 33-26.  Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) later followed up with a strong drive to the basket to keep the lead at ten for a 37-27 Wentworth lead at the half.
 
Azums started off with the first bucket of the second half and made the score 39-27. Ganley worked hard in the paint to get two points at 17:55, then Fulcar's strong drive to basket ended in two free throws. The Hawks finally got on the board after three minutes into the quarter with a bucket by Coene making the score 43-29.
 
A good dish from Marini to Jeff Stockmal (Shelton, Conn.) for two to cut the lead to eleven. Then a fancy move by Marini got two on the board at 9:36. A nice pass from Coene to Stockmal for two forced Wentworth into a timeout with 7:41 left in the second half.
 
The Hawks continued to work hard on defense. With Marini's hard drive to the basket he made his way to the free throw line made both and cut the lead to three with 3:05 left in the second half. But RWU could not take the lead. Ganley hit two free throws to keep Wentworth on top 61-53 with 1:33 left in the second half. Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) knocked a three pointer down to bring them within five with 16 seconds left but Wentworth was able to close the Hawks out.
 
Marini finished with 19 points and six assists, along with Coene's 12 points and five steals. Ganley finished with 24 points and five rebounds, while Azums had 18 points and 19 rebounds.
 
RWU will be at Nichols on Saturday at 7:30pm. Wentworth's next game will be Saturday at Salve Regina 3:00pm.
