Men’s Basketball End Skid With Win Over WNE

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team put an end to its four game losing streak and defeated Western New England University Wednesday night with an 81-58 win.
 
Roger Williams' Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) was a key player in the first half of the game, scoring 13 points in the period. The Hawks were trying their best to catch up in the first half, as they trailed nearly the entire period. Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) made a three point shot making the game 24-23 with just over three minutes left to play in the half. However, the Golden Bears held RWU scoreless over the final 1:48 and went into halftime leading 34-27.
 
Mike McGuire scored first in the second half for Western New England to make it a 34-27 lead. Rich Pugliese would eventually tie the game at 34 with a three-point. Then Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) broke the tie with a layup and the Hawks led the game 36-34. Roger Williams was on a 9-2 run at the start of the second half.
 
Mikey Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) regained the lead the for Western New England with a shot to make it 42-40 with 14:08 left, followed by a three-pointer for Alex Sikorski for a five-point advantage.
 
The Hawks fought to get the lead once again and Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) made a three-pointer to make it a 50-49 game. His shot began a 20-4 run for the Hawks, giving RWU a 67-53 lead with 4:47 to play and put the game out of reach.
 
Five Hawks finished in double figures, including Coene with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. O'Brien had 13 points while Pugliese scored 12. Marini had 11 points and Jennings finished with ten.
 
Pettway had 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists for Western New England. McGuire added ten points and seven rebounds.
 
Roger Williams University (12-6, 6-5 CCC) will host University of New England (8-9, 5-6 CCC) on Saturday, while Salve Regina will host Western New England University with both games at 3 p.m.
