Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team earned its 13
th victory against the University of New England Saturday afternoon with a final score of 90-83.
Going into the game, it was noticed that the Nor'easters play a unique style where they sub out a large rotation of players. Due to their fast pace, the first half was high scoring. This started off with a foul shot from Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) for the Hawks. The teams traded baskets, which didn't allow either team to gain a large advantage in the early going of the game. RWU went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 14-13 with 14:18 left in the half.
The teams went back and forth until RWU got their largest lead of the first half at 34-25 on a three from
Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.). With UNE determined to come back, they made a 17-8 run to tie the game at 42 on a three-pointer from Ryan Beatty (Rochester, Mass.). With 29 seconds left,
Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) made a layup for the Hawks with an assist from Jennings, putting RWU back in the lead. The second half ended with a score of 44-42.
The first part of the second half started with the Nor'easters' Daron Hoges (West Orange, N.J.) hitting a three-pointer to give them the lead. The opening five minutes consisted of six lead changes until a layup from Marini and an and-one from Coene changed the momentum of the game. The score shifted to 58-50 as the Hawks extended its lead with 13:52 left in the game.
Trailing 56-65, UNE went on an 8-2 run to cut RWU's lead to three on a three pointer from Drew Muniz (Gloucester, Mass.). The Hawks came right back with a three-point shot from Jennings to put them back up by six. With 1:14 left, Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.) hit a finished an and-one to extend RWU's lead to 80-70. The Nor'easters fought hard, but the Hawks came out a 90-83 victory.
Coene led the way for the Hawks with 22 points, seven rebounds, and seven steals. Marini contributed 19 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Pugliese and Jennings each scored 16 points for RWU. JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) had a double-double for the Hawks with 12 points and ten rebounds.
Hoges was the only player for the Nor'easters in double figures with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Muniz also contributed to the team, scoring nine points.
Roger Williams (13-6, 7-5 CCC) will host Salve Regina on Tuesday. UNE (8-11, 6-6 CCC) also will be home against Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday.
