Volleyball Takes Two Over Clark & UNE

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University won both of its Homecoming matches Saturday afternoon, defeating Clark University and the University of New England by 3-0 scores.
 
In the first match against Clark, both teams traded points early on, with neither side leading by more than three. However, RWU pulled away from Clark with a 7-1 run to turn a 7-6 lead into a 14-7 advantage. The Hawks would eventually take the set by a 25-14 margin.
 
Clark scored the first four points of the second set and eventually go up 6-1. With the Cougars leading 10-5, RWU called a timeout to regroup and came out with five straight points to tie things up at ten. Later with the score knotted at 16, RWU scored four straight points then closed the set out with three of the final four points to win 25-22.
 
RWU pulled away early in the third set and never looked back. The Hawks utilized an 11-1 run with the score tied at three to take a commanding 14-4 lead. RWU went up by as many as 13 and took the set and the match with a 25-12 win.
 
Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) and Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.) led RWU with 11 kills each with Neuberger adding four blocks (1 solo, 3 assist). Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had 32 assists, with Jaime Gaffga (Mattituck, N.Y.) leading RWU with 12 digs.
 
Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) led Clark with 11 kills. Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) handed out 16 assists, while Bailey Vogel (Salt Lake City, Utah) had nine digs and one service ace.
 
The Hawks came out hot in the second match of the day. After UNE scored the first point, RWU scored five straight points as part of a 10-3 to open the set. The Hawks extended the lead to 13 (19-6) en route to a 25-9 win.
 
UNE fared a little better in the second set. Both teams traded points throughout the game, with eight ties and three lead changes occurring in set two. RWU got a little breathing room with a 4-1 run with the score tied at 13, leading to a UNE timeout. The Hawks later scored five straight points for a 23-16 lead, and eventually took the set 25-18.
 
In the third set, UNE grabbed a quick 5-2 advantage. However an 8-0 Hawk run put RWU on top by five, leading to a Nor'Easter timeout. RWU would not let up, extending the lead to nine (22-13) Neuberger clinched the 25-16 win for the Hawks with an ace to wrap up the match in RWU's favor.
 
Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) led RWU with 13 kills, with Fields adding 32 assists and 15 digs. Neuberger notched five kills, four service aces, and seven blocks (2 solo, 5 assist).
 
Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) had seven kills for UNE, while Sydney Christiansen (Palatine, Ill.) had 14 assists. Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) added nine digs for the Nor'Easters.
 
Roger Williams (14-11, 5-1 CCC) heads to Salve Regina on Tuesday.
