BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team picked up a key Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Tuesday evening with a 3-2 victory against rival Endicott College.
The Hawks came out hot in the opening set, using an 8-1 run to kick off the match. RWU never let Endicott come closer than three as they took the first game 25-18.
Endicott opened the second set on a 4-1 run before the Hawks tied things at six. It would be back-and-forth throughout the whole set, with ten ties and three lead changes. However, Endicott held off RWU late and tied the match with a 25-22 win.
The Gulls used another early run to take a lead that they would not relinquish. With the set knotted at four, EC rolled off a 14-3 run to take a commanding 18-7 lead. Endicott would ultimately take the set 25-14 for a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, the Hawks rallied late to stave off the loss. Trailing 19-21, RWU called a timeout then responded with a 6-1 run to take the set 25-22 and force a deciding fifth set.
The fifth set was tight, with the two teams combining for six ties and two lead changes. Endicott scored three straight points late to tie the set at 13 apiece. However, RWU regrouped after a timeout and scored three of the next four points to win 16-14 and take the match.
Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Nick Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) both had double-doubles for RWU with LoIacono finishing with 16 kills and 19 digs, and Fallisi going for 12 kills and 25 digs.
Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had 41 assists while
Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) tied a school record with nine block assists and 11 total blocks.
Emma Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Amanda Gilbert (Hopkinton, Mass.) each finished with 14 kills for Endicott. Remi Quesnelle (Sunderland, Mass.) had 22 digs and eight kills, while Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) finished with 41 assists.
Roger Williams (11-9, 3-1 CCC) will take on #3 Johnson & Wales Friday, while Endicott (13-8, 3-1 CCC) hosts Bowdoin, also on Friday night.
