Women's Soccer Defeats Salve in OT

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer Team defeated Salve Regina 3-3 this Tuesday night in overtime.

Less than 10 minutes into the game, Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) took a shot from a corner kick that ended up giving the Hawks their first goal of the game, putting them in the lead 1-0. In the 12th minute, Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) for the Seahawks saved a shot from Maddie Neri (Upton, Mass.).

Two minutes later, Kylie Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) took an assist from Neri to bring RWU's lead to 2-0. Another two minutes were past when the Hawks scored another goal from Lemiere-Barnes to bring the score to 3-0.

Neither team scored for the remaining 29 minutes of the first half. Pala kept busy in goal with five shots from RWU.

With 17 minutes into the second half, Salve scored their first goal by Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) taking an assist from Delaney Maxwell (Lincoln, R.I.), putting the score at 1-3. Seven minutes later, the Seahawks scored their second goal of the game from Margaret Hanley (Pembroke, Mass.), cutting the deficit to one at 2-3.

With 15 minutes left of the second half, Salve tied the game with a goal from Devyn DeFalco (Brockton, Mass.) taking an assist from Katie Szemreylo (Marlborough, Conn.). With the score at 3-3 by the end of the second half, the game went into overtime.

With 33.8 seconds remaining in the game, Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season to lead the Hawks into victory 4-3.

Brooke Hathaway (Riverton, Utah), Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) and Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) had one save each for RWU. Pala had seven saves for Salve.

"Going from the battle of the CCC to the battle of Rhode Island is not for the faint heated," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "Every game you play for the Hawks is a big game. Our history and expectations make us a target for everyone we play, which in my eyes is a good thing. You want to be that team that the opponents circle and think about before they play you.

"This is very true when it comes to Roger versus Salve. We are so near to each other and being from the same state we recruit the same players, the coaches always see each other at recruiting events and competitions so we have good banter and can shake hands at the end of the match.

"Winning this game is important for the three points, for the present which is important but also for the future of the team, program and continued development of our goals we set for ourselves. We want to get the players that reflect our desire to compete, to be in a team that is competitive from within as well as against the competition we get in matches.

"We are in good form and are scoring goals. We still haven't maxed out our ability to play for 90 minutes and dominate a game, but the signs are looking like we have that look in the eye that we are all on the same page. You can see the determination and confidence we can challenge the best teams and give them a run for the big prize at the end of the season.

"It is always very satisfying when you believe you have an opportunity to win something at the end of a long season. We have had a few bumps in the road just like every season but you need to focus on the success you accomplish rather than the mistakes, but the mistakes help us learn to get better, better every day at practice and better in every game we play.

"We have grown more this season than any other during my coaching career with this group because of the challenges we have overcome. We were written off early in the first few weeks but that was a mistake and that is why we beat the last four teams we have come up against and why teams should be scared to play us in the future.

"It comes back to how we train and practice every day on the pitch and then how we transfer that belief into our matches! The future of our program is in a good place with these new young players who are going to take over from our graduating seniors."

RWU (6-7, 3-1 CCC) will travel to Gordon College this Saturday. Salve (5-6, 2-3 CCC) will host Springfield College on Saturday.
