HARTFORD, Conn. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team suffered a 45-58 setback to Eastern Connecticut State University Friday evening in the first game of the Trinity College Tournament.
A slow start to the game put RWU in a hole they could not climb out of. After
Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) began the game with a layup, the Warriors scored 11 unanswered points over a five-minute stretch for a nine-point lead. They would eventually end the first quarter with a 16-4 lead.
The Hawks could not quite pull off a comeback in the second quarter. RWU pulled within eight (16-24) with just over five minutes left to halftime, but an 11-0 ECSU run put the Warriors up by 19 going into the break.
From there, Eastern Connecticut State never let Roger Williams come within single digits the rest of the way. The Warriors led by as many as 25 on the way to the win.
Leone and
Alyssa Grant (Berlin, Conn.) each scored eight points for the Hawks, with Leone adding six rebounds.
Hannah Driscoll (Hampton, N.H.) added seven points, three rebounds, and two steals, with
Emily Yonych (Cheshire, Conn.) contributing six boards and three blocks.
Roger Williams (1-1) will face Mitchell College Saturday at 1:00pm in the consolation game. Mitchell fell 80-50 to Trinity in the other game of the tournament.
