Volleyball Set Back By Wentworth For First Time

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team dropped a 1-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference match to Wentworth Institute of Technology Thursday evening.

The loss for the Hawks was the team's first ever against the Leopards. Entering the match, RWU was 43-0 against Wentworth, with 22 of those wins in CCC play.

Neither team was able to get much of an advantage in the first set, with the two sets trading points back and forth. There were 14 ties and four lead changes, with neither side ever winning by more than two. Wentworth broke a 24-all tie with a kill and an ace to serve up the early lead.

The second set saw more of the same as the first, with the two sides staying neck-and-neck. With nine ties and four lead changes, it would not be until the end when Wentworth pulled away. With the score knotted at 17, the Leopards used an 8-4 run, culminating in a block assist to claim the 25-21 win.

The Hawks found themselves down in a 0-4 hole to begin the third set. They would tie the set at eight hold Wentworth at arm's length for most of the game. RWU would claim the game with a 25-23 victory.

RWU fell behind early to Wentworth in the fourth set and was playing catch-up throughout most of the set. With the score tied at 18, three consecutive miscues by RWU led to the team calling a timeout. RWU managed to make it a 21-23 deficit, but the Leopards scored the final two to earn the milestone win.
