MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team held on for a 57-54 win over Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Curry College Wednesday evening.
Emily Yonych (Cheshire, Conn.) put the Hawks on the board first with a layup two minutes into the contest. Her basket began a 6-0 run for the Hawks to begin the game. The Hawks held Curry scoreless for the first five minutes of the game but only were able to hold that six-point advantage. RWU extended the lead to seven points with three minutes left, but the Colonels ended the quarter on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 14 going into the second quarter.
The second period saw the contest go back and forth between RWU and Curry. A jumper by Amanda Leal helped put Curry up 23-20 with 5:35 left in the half. Over the next three minutes, RWU utilized a 10-0 run to go up by seven, eventually taking a three-point lead going into halftime.
RWU maintained its lead throughout the third quarter but not by much. The Hawks' lead hovered between one and five for most of the period. RWU's defense held Curry to only four points over the final five minutes to help bring the lead to six going into the fourth.
In the final period, Curry made a late rally in the final minute. Emily Irwin sank a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to make it a 54-55 game.
Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) sank a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game. On the final possession, Curry missed its final three-point attempt to tie the game as the Hawks escaped with the win.
Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) finished with 18 points and eight rebounds for RWU.
Karli Opalka (Southbury, Conn.) added nine points and 12 rebounds, while Yonych went for six points and seven boards.
Roger Williams (13-11, 11-4 CCC) wraps up the regular season at home against Western New England.
