Women’s Basketball Falls To Endicott In Close Game

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team lost to Endicott College in a close Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup Saturday afternoon with the final score of 44-47.

The win for Endicott breaks an eight-game winning streak for Roger Williams, the team's longest of the season.

After four minutes of play, Endicott was the first team to get on the board. The Hawks answered back by going on an 11-0 run, not allowing the Gulls to score for the rest of the first quarter. Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) sank a three at the buzzer to end the first quarter, the Hawks leading 11-2.

Determined to stay in the game, the Gulls scored the first two baskets of the second quarter. A 5-0 run by the Gulls made it a one-point game at 18-17. Emily Pratt (Gardner, Mass.) continued that run to 7-0 which allowed Endicott to take their second lead of the game with a little over two minutes left in the half. Endicott extended their lead to four points to end the half with a score of 25-21, scoring 23 points in the period after only two in the first.

At halftime, Jerahian, Karli Opalka (Southbury, Mass.), Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.), and Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass) all led the Hawks with five points each. Opalka also led with six rebounds for Roger Williams. For the Gulls, Shannon Gilbert (Easton, Conn.) led with seven points and Mikaela Rogers (Haverhill, Mass.) led with four boards.

Mancinelli gave the Hawks their first two points of the second half and Pratt answered back with a jumper for the Gulls. For the remainder of the quarter, both teams went back and forth with scoring, which let the Gulls maintain their lead. A basket for the Hawks by Margarita Delaporta (Canton, Mass.) in the final seconds of the quarter gave Endicott only a three-point lead going into the fourth quarter (34-31).

Two baskets by Opalka and Leone to begin the final quarter put the Hawks back into the lead by one point (35-34). The score stayed within a two-point difference both ways until Pratt hit a three for Endicott with less than three minutes left in the game (43-38). A three by Leone kept the game close within the final minutes. With 48 seconds left in the game, another three by Leone made it a one-point game in favor of the Gulls at 44-45.

A foul by the Hawks in the final seconds of the game sent Catie Lipscomb (West Springfield, Mass.) to the line, where she hit both free throws, allowing Endicott to hang onto a three-point lead. The Hawks were unable to get a clean look a three and Endicott escaped with a win.

Leone led the Hawks with 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Mancinelli finished with eight points, two assists, and five boards. Opalka led Roger Williams with 10 rebounds while Emily Yonych (Cheshire, Conn.) closely followed, collecting seven.

Pratt led Endicott with 12 points and eight rebounds. Kaleigh Putnam (Wallingford, Conn.) and Rogers followed with eight points each. Rogers, Gilbert, and Lipscomb all had six rebounds for the Gulls.
