BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Sailing team collected another win this past weekend as part of the team's three regattas, two of which were abbreviated due to inclement weather.
Roger Williams came away with the top spot at the Arctic Circle Team Racing Invitational at Tufts, besting the eight-team field. Due to heavy snow that fell late Saturday night into Sunday morning, racing was restricted to only Saturday. In that time, the Hawks posted a 6-1 overall record, defeating Boston College, Brown, MIT, Northeastern, URI and Vermont. The team's only blemish came against Tufts. Competing for RWU were
Preston Duclos (Westport, Mass.),
Rachel Holick (Lawrence, N.J.),
Cameron Wood (Corona del Mar, Calif.),
Dane Pedersen (Chanhassen, Minn.),
Grant Gridley (Portland, Ore.),
Kylie Freitas (Escondido, Calif.),
Johnny Walton (Grosse Pointe, Mich.),
Brendan Little (Easton, Md.), and
Peter Neal (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).
At the Rudkin Team Race, hosted by Eckerd, Roger Williams posted a runner-up finish. With RWU, Boston College, and MIT all holding identical 9-5 records, RWU broke a three-way with three wins over both teams in the four matchups. Roger Williams also collected a pair of wins over Yale, and Salve Regina, with one win each against Eckerd and Connecticut College. Sailing for Roger Williams were
Conner Harding (Naples, Fla.),
Jennifer Agell (Huntington, N.Y.),
Daniel Petrovic (Tortola, BVI),
Emily Gildea (Palos Park, Ill.),
Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas), and
Hallie Repeta (Portland, Maine).
The last race of the weekend for RWU was the Icebreaker Fleet Race, also hosted by Tufts. The event lived up to its name as racing on Sunday was also halted due to the inclement weather. Despite the conditions, 14 total races were still able to be conducted. At A Division,
Kelsey Shakin (Boston, Mass.) and
Kristi Dolan (West Islip, N.Y.) finished in third place, coming away with a win and three third-place results while finishing seventh or better in every race.
Madeline Pope (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and
Ariana Smaldone (Tiverton, R.I.) earned fifth place at B Division, including a runner-up finish and a fourth-place result among their races. Three of their races were scored using an average due to an issue with boat three taking on water in the hull.
