CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit to Pomona-Pitzer College, as the Sagehens defeated the Hawks 15-11 Friday evening.
The Hawks found themselves in a 4-0 deficit less than four minutes into the game. Pomona-Pitzer's Maggie Sweeney scored two of the four goals in the opening run to help the Sagehens grab a quick lead.
Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) ended Pomona-Pitzer's run with a score at the 23:54 mark, but the Sagehens notched back-to-back goals to take a 6-1 lead.
Emily Stoeppel (Brookline, Conn.) added another goal for Roger Williams with 14:52 left before Pomona-Pitzer tacked on two more goals.
The Hawks managed to close out the half scoring three of the last four goals, with two by
Delana Erickson (Concord, N.H.) and one by
Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.). RWU's scoring burst helped pull the team to within four going into halftime (5-9).
Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) kicked off the second half with three unanswered goals to bring the Hawks within one. The two squads traded goals to keep it a one-score game in Pomona-Pitzer's favor. Unfortunately for RWU, the Sagehens extended the lead back to four with three straight goals.
Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) used a free-position goal to bring RWU back within three. However the Sagehens scored twice to make it a 15-10 game. Erickson added a goal with 5:29 left, but the Hawks could not add more as the Sagehens held on for the win.
Erickson and Gillis each scored three goals and one assist.
Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) added five ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers.
Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) took the loss, allowing five goals with one save.
Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) added ten saves in relief of Goodwin.
Roger Williams (2-2) will host Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday in a 7:00 pm game.
