BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team defeated Coast Guard Academy this Wednesday, 8-7.
The Hawks were on the board first with an unassisted goal from
Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) seven minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Luisa Santos (Leesburg, Va.) took an assist from Carter Sanderson (Stillwater, Minn.) to tie the game 1-1.
At the 17:45 mark, Haley Howard (Wilton, Conn.) reached the back of the net to put the Bears in the lead. With 12 minutes remaining in the first half,
Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) took an assist from Warren in a player-up play to tie the game again.
A minute later,
Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) passed the ball to
Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) to give RWU the lead. Coast Guard did not let this deficit stay for long with a goal from Kathrine Pittman (Nantucket, Mass.) assisted by Haley Howard (Wilton, Conn.) to tie the game at 3-3.
The teams continued to go back and forth with another unassisted goal from Howard to put the Bears in the lead at 4-3. Forty seconds later, Gillis made a second goal to tie the game for the fourth time. With just under two minutes left in the first half, Stoeppel assisted Sarazin to put the score at 5-4 and the Hawks in the lead going into the second half.
At the 27:12 mark, Maddie Rizzuto (Yardley, Pa.) tied the game taking an assist from Howard. About five minutes later, Warren scored her second goal of the game to put the Hawks back in the lead. With just under 17 minutes left,
Delana Erickson (Concord, N.H.) scored in a free position shot to give RWU their biggest lead of the game.
With 13:28 left in the game, Etta Davis (Great Falls, Va.) found the back of the net for the Bears after taking an assist from Howard to put the score at 6-7. Both teams were kept scoreless for the next eight minutes until Warren scored unassisted in a free position shot. Less than a minute later, Haley McCue (Arnold, Md.) scored the last goal for the Bears, and the Hawks took the win with a final score of 8-7.
Warren led the Hawks with four points on three goals and one assist. Stoeppel also contributed with two points on one goal and five draw controls.
Lydia Nelson (Center Morches, N.Y.) made four saves in the win.
Howard led the Bears with five points on two goals, three assists and three draw controls. Mary Budri (Falmouth, Maine) took the loss for Coast Guard, making 16 saves on the night.
Roger Williams (3-2) will host Keene State this Friday. Coast Guard (1-5) will host Smith College on Saturday.
