BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team posted a 14-6 victory over Keene State College Friday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
An illegal stick during stick check led to a player-up opportunity to begin the game.
Emily Stoeppel (Brookline, Conn.) converted the chance for the Hawks to give RWU a quick 1-0 lead. Tess Masci (Hopkinton, N.H.) came back with a goal a minute later for the Owls to knot the game up.
Three straight scores by
Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine),
Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.), and
Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) helped regain the lead for Roger Williams University. Brigid Casey (Mont Vernon, N.H.) stopped the Hawk run with a goal with 17:54 left in the half, but two more scores for RWU brought the lead to four in RWU's favor.
A
Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) tally with 10:54 left in the period would be the final goal scored by either team in the half, as Roger Williams went into the break with an 8-3 lead.
In the second half, a green card on Roger Williams in the first minute gave Keene State their own player-up opportunity. Chelsea Lewis took advantage and scored less than 30 seconds after the issued card to pull the Owls within four. Yet Warren and Flahive each scored within two minutes of each other to make it a six-goal game.
Halfway through the period, both teams traded goals to make it 11-6 in RWU's favor. Yet a 3-0 run to close out the game helped RWU come away with the 14-6 win, including an open net goal for Warren due to a yellow card on the Owls' keeper. The Hawks almost made it a 15-6 win, but an illegal stick disallowed a goal with 10:27 left in the game.
Stoeppel, Sarazin, and Flahive each finished with three goals, with both Sarazin and Flahive adding an assist. Stoeppel added seven draw controls, while
Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) and
Rylie Dalzell (Wrentham, Mass.) each finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) had four saves in the win for RWU.
Casey had three points (2 G, 1 A) and six draw controls, while Lewis scored twice. Marina Pappalardo (Gorham, Maine) added two assists. Joanna Steinhauer (Middletown, R.I.) made 11 stops for Keene State.
Roger Williams (4-2) will host Colby College Sunday at 11:00am, while Keene State (1-2) hosts Wheaton on Wednesday.
