Women’s Lacrosse Routs Curry

BRISTOL, R.I. — A first half surge pushed the Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team to a 19-3 victory over Curry College in the team's Commonwealth Coast Conference home opener.

The Hawks pulled away early and never looked back. Emily Stoeppel (Brookline, Conn.) put in the first goal of the game off of a pass from Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.) less than two minutes into the game. Curry was able to tie the game two minutes later, with Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) converting a goal from a Sharon Doherty (North Easton, Mass.) pass to tie the game at one.

Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) answered with a goal on the following Roger Williams possession. Her score would spark a 14-0 run for the Hawks over the remainder of the half. Flahive would score four times in the first half to help push the Hawks to a commanding 15-1 lead. Danielle Anastasia (Walpole, Mass.) would also log her first goal of the season as part of the Hawk rally.

The Hawk defense played a large role in the team's dominant first half performance. Outside of the lone goal early in the half, RWU did not allow a single shot for Curry in the half. In addition, the Hawks forced 11 Colonel turnovers in the half while holding Curry to only two successful clears in the period.

Curry bookended the second half with goals by Andria Torres (Milford, Conn.) at 24:32 and Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) at 5:47. RWU outscored Curry 4-2 in the half, including the first collegiate goal by Adriana Ingarra (North Branford, Conn.).

Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) did not need to make a save in the first half as she picked up the win. Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the second half for RWU.

Stoeppel led RWU with seven points (5 G, 2 A) while Flahive added five points (4 G, 1 A). Rylie Dalzell (Wrentham, Mass.) finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) stuffed the stat sheet with a goal, an assists, six draw controls, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Parker, Dubel, and Torres all socred for Curry, while Doherty added two assists. Dubel also added three draw controls, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) took the loss, making three saves.
