BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Sailing team began the spring portion of the season this past Sunday at two regattas, coming away with a win and a third-place finish.
Due to inclement weather this past Saturday, RWU's opening regattas, the Hap Moore Team Race and Rhody the Riveter, were both restricted one-day events with competition occurring on Sunday.
At the Hap Moore Team Race, hosted by Coast Guard, Roger Williams piloted to the win, going undefeated over the course of the day. The Hawks cruised to wins over Brown, Boston University, Connecticut College, Coast Guard, Rhode Island, and Yale. The victory over BU proved to be the crucial win at the regatta, as the Terriers placed second with a 5-1 record. Sailing for Roger Williams on Sunday were
Conner Harding (Naples, Fla.),
Jennifer Agell (Huntington, N.Y.),
Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas),
Rachel Holick (Lawrence, N.J.),
Daniel Petrovic (Tortola, BVI), and
Emily Gildea (Palos Park, Ill.).
At the Rhody the Riveter, hosted by Salve Regina, Roger Williams claimed third place overall. The abbreviated regatta only allowed for five races on the day to be sailed. At A Division,
Kelsey Shakin (Boston, Mass.) and
Kristi Dolan (West Islip, N.Y.) sailed for RWU. After coming in ninth in the opening race, they came through with a pair of third-place results, a fourth, and a win in the final race.
Madeline Pope (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and
Ariana Smaldone (Tiverton, R.I.) sailed for RWU at B Division, coming away with a third-place finish as part of their three top-ten finishes.
