BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse came away with a 23-3 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Prior to the game, the Hawks honored the three seniors,
Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.),
Serena Murphy (Brewster, N.Y.), and
Abby Wollenberg (Farmington, Conn.), for their contributions to the RWU Women's Lacrosse program over the past four years.
Stoeppel and
Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) both tallied goals for RWU in the first five minutes of play. Stoeppel would later add two more goals for a 4-0 RWU lead with 17:28 left in the first half. Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) halted the RWU run with a goal at the 15:45 mark. However, Roger Williams would roll off six unanswered goals over an eight-minute stretch—four of which by Stoeppel—to extend the lead to nine.
Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) used an Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) pass to score with 6:37 left in the half, but
Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) and
Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) posted the final two goals of the half for RWU, giving the Hawks a 12-2 lead.
In the second half, Roger Williams continued the scoring rally with eight goals in the first 16 minutes of the period. Part of the run was an assist by Wollenberg on a Warren goal, giving her her first point in two years since returning from injury. Wollenberg would add a free position goal late in the second half for her first goal since sophomore year.
Stoeppel tied the single-game goals record for RWU with nine in the game while setting a career high with 12 points. Gills, Sarazin, and Warren all scored three goals for RWU, while Wollenberg set a new career high with three assists to go along with her goal.
Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) needed only one save in 30 minutes of action for the win.
Paradis scored twice with seven draw controls for Wentworth in the game with Galan adding a goal, an assist, and three draw controls. Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.) had two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) made five saves in the loss.
Roger Williams (10-3, 6-0 CCC) steps out of CCC play on Tuesday with a 7:00pm game against Bridgewater State. Wentworth (8-5, 1-5 CCC) heads to Salve Regina, also on Tuesday.
