Women’s Lacrosse Posts Shutout In CCC Quarterfinal Win

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team began its 2019 Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament run with a 19-0 shutout over Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday evening.

It marks the first time in program history that the Hawks have shut out opponents in back-to-back games, as RWU is coming off a 24-0 win over Nichols in the team's regular season finale.

Roger Williams jumped out of the gate with five goals in the first ten minutes of play. RWU got two scores from Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) and one each from Delana Erickson (Concord, N.H.), Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine), and Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.).

RWU would tally six more goals over a nine-minute stretch including three from Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) to put the Hawks up 10-0 with 8:06 remaining in the first half. Erickson and Warren would each put a goal on the board in the final five minutes of the half to give RWU a 12-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Emily Stoeppel (Brookline, Conn.) put in a free-position goal less than two minutes into the period to begin the half for the Hawks. In all, six different Hawks scored in the second half with the final tally by Abby Wollenburg (Farmington, Conn.) as RWU outscored the Leopards 7-0.

Wentworth managed to put 11 shots on the board including a pair of free-position shots by Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.). Yet timely saves by Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) kept the Leopards scoreless.

Warren led RWU with seven points (4 G, 3 A) while Gillis, Erickson, and Stoeppel all added three goals each. Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) finished with four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Nelson made seven stops in the shutout win.

Paradis finished with four ground balls, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.) added two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) finished with seven saves in the loss.

Roger Williams (12-5) will host the University of New England Tuesday in the CCC Semifinals. Wentworth ends the season at 9-7.
