Women’s Lacrosse Sweats Out Win Over UNE

BRISTOL, R.I. — The second-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team pulled away late against the third-seeded University of New England with a 16-14 win over the Nor'Easters Tuesday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals.

Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) scored twice in the first four minutes for a quick 2-0 Nor'Easter lead, causing RWU to call a timeout. After the break, RWU went on a 5-0 run over the next nine minutes with goals from Devon Srazin (Falmouth, Maine), Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.), Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.), and Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.).

The Nor'Easters would come right back with five straight goals of the own, two by Julia Benjamin (Tolland, Conn.) and three by Casey Conwell (North Andover, Mass.). The Hawks tied the game at seven with 3:49 left in the half with scores from Stoeppel and Delana Erickson (Concord, N.H.), but the Nor'Easters got the two goals right back in the final two minutes, including a tally from Camelo with two seconds left. UNE would take a 9-7 lead entering halftime.

The Hawks came out the break with three straight scores from Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine), Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) and Sarazin to regain the lead in the first three minutes. After both sides traded goals, the Nor'Easters used a 3-0 run to go up 13-11 with 16:55 to play. RWU came back with three goals in a row to take a 14-13 lead with 8:51 remaining.

The Nor'Easters would not give up, as Nichole Carvalho (South Kingstown, R.I.) knotted the game up at 14 with just under five minutes left. Then with 3:09 left, a yellow card by UNE led to a free-position attempt by Warren. Off the whistle, she tossed a quick pass to Rivard who converted the go-ahead player-up goal. Isabella Blessington (Harpswell, Maine) would add an insurance free-position goal with 1:33 left to put RWU up by two.

UNE won the ensuing draw but would turn the ball over with 1:23 left and not regain possession, allowing RWU to hold on for the win.

Sarazin (4 G, 1 A) and Warren (1 G, 4 A) both finished with five points while Rivard (3 G, 1 A) and Stoeppel (4 G) both added four points. Drain finished with four draw controls, four ground balls, and a career-high five caused turnovers. Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) made three saves in the win.

Camelo (5 G, 1 A) and Carvalho (2 G, 4 A) had six points apiece, with Conwell going for five points (3 G, 2 A). Olivia Carpenter (Middlebury, Vt.) finished with seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. Maritza Nary (Dover, N.H.) had seven saves in the loss.

Roger Williams (13-5) will make its sixth straight appearance in the CCC Championship Game on Friday. UNE ends the season at 10-8.
