How It Happened
RWU and Brandeis were locked in a tight battle from start to finish. The opening set saw seven ties and two lead changes with neither side leading by more than four. RWU almost dropped the set, trailing 24-22. Yet kills from
Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and
Katherine Pickard tied things up at 24. Brandeis got a kill on the ensuing serve but service error put RWU back in the driver's seat. Pickard would claim the 27-25 win for RWU with back-to-back kills.
The second set was also close, but Brandeis was able to pull away halfway through the game. With the score tied at 11, the Judges broke away from RWU and eventually took a 20-15 lead. Belle Scott put away the set for Brandeis with consecutive kills for a 25-18 win.
The third set saw Roger Williams rally from a nine-point deficit (5-14) and ultimately tie the set at 25-25. From there, RWU would go up by one but the Judges would answer right back with a point. It would take five extra points capped off by a Brandeis attack error to give RWU the 30-28 win.
RWU carried that momentum into the fourth set, where the Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to three kills from LoIacono and a service ace from
Julia Fields. RWU would take a 14-9 lead before Brandeis mounted a thrilling come back. The Judges utilized an 11-2 run to turn a five-point deficit into a four-point lead (20-16). From there, it was time for the Hawks to put together a run of their own, a 7-3 rally to tie the set at 23 and force a timeout. After the break,
Kristen Dansereau clinched the win for the Hawks with a pair of kills for the 3-1 victory.
