Alumni Profile: Caitlin (Mayo) Space '08, M '10 (Women's Soccer)

Welcome to the newest RWU Athletics weekly feature, Alumni Profiles. Here we will be featuring a former Roger Williams student-athlete and catching up with them on their career since graduating from RWU.

Our next entry comes from Caitlin (Mayo) Space. Caitlin was a four-year member of the Women's Soccer team and received her Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from RWU in 2008 and her Master's Degree in Architecture from RWU in 2010. Caitlin was a four-year member of the Women's Soccer team and currently ranks sixth in program history in goals scored (41), points (102), and game-winning goals (11). She also spent one year as an assistant coach on both the 2009 Men's Soccer team and the 2008 Women's Soccer team, helping the women to their first CCC Championship that season.

What is your current job title and what does that entail?
I am an Assistant Project Manager at Noonan Brothers Painting. As an Assistant Project Manager for a commercial painting company, I am responsible for reviewing bid requests, project specifications, and Architectural/MEP drawings so that my company can provide clients with accurate pricing for proposed projects. In order to do this well, I have to effectively communicate with the General Contractors and/or Property Management Companies who are requesting pricing to ensure the scope of work is agreed upon. Additionally, it is my job to assist Project Managers and Senior Project Managers within the company on an administrative basis with tasks such as setting up new jobs, processing change orders, billing completed work and reviewing job costs. And lastly, I am also responsible for helping the company track jobs sales and forecasted sales.

How did your athletic involvement at RWU help you in the path that you chose following graduation?
Being a student-athlete at RWU has helped shape me into the person and professional that I am today. My experience learning to juggle my studies and my responsibilities as a soccer player/team captain taught me how to prioritize my time and multitask. It also instilled leadership qualities in me that I use on a daily basis. And most importantly, it taught me to work hard and stay focused. All of which has undoubtedly helped me find a successful career path that ultimately lead me to a job that I love.

What is your most fond memory of RWU Athletics?
My fondest memory of RWU Athletics was actually my first year of grad school. I was an assistant coach on the Women's Soccer team at the time, and after enduring four years of heartbreak, I had the privilege to watch the 2008 team finally win the CCC Championship. To this day, I am so incredibly proud of that team, and all the ladies that came before them. Each and every one of them helped build the women's program into an unstoppable powerhouse.

What would you say were your greatest athletic and academic accomplishments during your time at RWU?
I would have to say my greatest athletic and academic accomplishment was being able to juggle one of the most demanding majors on campus with my role as a soccer player. There were days, even weeks where I had to miss practices for studio presentations so I had to learn to adapt. I would go to the field after my team had left to get my own practice in so I wouldn't fall behind in my own performance.

The toughest and yet the most rewarding games I ever played in were the ones I had to learn to dig deeper than I had ever thought possible. After long nights in studio running on very little to no sleep, I had step up my game. I had a job to do and it was to play my part so the team could get the win. To this day I still remind myself what Coach Kiablick used to say, "It's mind over matter, you just have to be willing to dig deep enough."

Why did you choose to attend RWU?
I chose RWU because it has so much to offer. It has an absolutely beautiful campus, the Architecture program is top tier and it was one of the only schools that would allow me to do what I loved most—be a student-athlete studying architecture.

Were you involved in any extracurricular activities outside of athletics? If so, what?
Yes, I was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

What piece of advice would you have for current RWU student-athletes?
Win or lose, remember you are a part of something much bigger than a game or a championship. You are part of a team that will be your family long after the final whistle blows.
