RWU To Cancel Remainder Of Spring Season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – With the health and safety of our student-athletes in mind, as well as the welfare of our campus communities as a whole, Roger Williams University Athleticcs, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Board of Directors, have come to the difficult decision to cancel all athletic competition. Institutions with teams that have returned from spring break trips will cancel athletic competition immediately. Institutions with teams currently on spring break trips will cancel athletic competitions upon the completion of those respective trips.

The decision comes following the NCAA Board of Governors' decision to cancel the remaining winter and spring NCAA Championships and encouraging conferences and institutions to make decisions and take action in the best interest of their student-athletes and communities.

Additionally, the NCAA Board of Governors directs Divisions I, II and III to enact modifications, changes, or waivers to legislation and rules where appropriate to provide necessary relief due to regulations and policies impacted by COVID-19.

Statement From Kiki Jacobs, Director of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation

To all Roger Williams Spring Sport Student-Athletes,

First and foremost, I want to thank you for bearing with the University and the entire RWU Athletic Department through this arduous process as we have been determining the best method to deal with such an unprecedented health crisis that has affected your involvement in athletics, your education, and your general well-being.

Throughout this week, the University Cabinet, along with VP John King and myself have been tirelessly working to ensure the safety of all of you on the field of competition as well as on campus. We have met constantly throughout the week to try to maintain the integrity of your season.

As the week has progressed, various institutions and conferences across the nation have taken proactive measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, including postponing or cancelling the spring season. With the NCAA making the decision to cancel the remaining Winter and Spring championships, we knew that the outlook to continue the Spring season did not look good.

As a result, the Commonwealth Coast Conference made the difficult and painful decision to cancel all athletic competition for the remainder of the Spring season. The reasoning behind this decision bears in mind the health and safety of our all student-athletes, as well as the welfare of all campus communities.

I want you to know this wasn't an easy conclusion to come to. As a former college student-athlete, I understand the time and effort you have spent gearing up for this season, and I recognize the disappointment that comes with this decision. Though you all may not agree with this outcome, please understand that this resolution is being conducted with the utmost consideration for your health and well-being, first and foremost.

For those who will be returning next year, I know that you will come back with an intense passion for your sport and you will achieve great success next year.  For our seniors and those that will not be returning next season, I want to extend my deepest gratitude for all that you have done as a Roger Williams University student-athlete and wish you the best of luck going forward.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Kiki Jacobs
