Alumni Profile: MaryKathryn Slattery (Field Hockey)

Welcome to the newest RWU Athletics weekly feature, Alumni Profiles. Here we will be featuring a former Roger Williams student-athlete and catching up with them on their career since graduating.

Our next entry comes from MaryKathryn (MK) Slattery. MK was a four-year member of the Field Hockey team and graduated from RWU in 2018 with degrees in Accounting and Finance. In her sophomore year, she helped the team qualify for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament for the first time in program history. She was a two-time team captain, a three-time RWU and CCC All-Academic Team selection, and ended her career tied for fourth all-time in program history in defensive saves.

What is your current job title and what does that entail?
I am a Senior Audit Associate at KPMG, LLP. I primarily work with Asset Management clients including Banks and Private Equity Funds both leading teams and coordinating with clients. This involves constant personal skill development, teaching and guiding staff, coordinating with managers and partners for resources, planning, and status updates, and working with clients to ensure their budgets and expectations are met.

How did your athletic involvement at RWU help you in the path that you chose following graduation?
I knew I always wanted to be a part of a team, reinforced by my time on the RWU Field Hockey team. Participating in sports in college teaches you how to manage your personal life, your passions, and your career simultaneously. Through field hockey, I was able to further develop my ability to work with a variety of personalities and work styles.

What would you say were your greatest athletic and academic accomplishments during your time at RWU?
My greatest athletic accomplishment was when I was given the early responsibility of captain junior year and carried this into senior year. Academically was achieving Summa Cum Laude along with 150 credit hours for my CPA license.

Why did you choose to attend RWU?
I applied to eight random schools in the Northeast near cities. I had not visited any and was accepted to all. After visiting the first seven, I realized none were my fit and remembered I still had Roger as an option. I decided to visit, met the field hockey coach and looked at the view from the upstairs treadmills, and decided it would do. Best decision I ever made!

Were you involved in any extracurricular activities outside of athletics?
I was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Alpha Chi, and Beta Gamma Sigma, as well as a member of the Financial Management Association.

What piece of advice would you have for current RWU student-athletes?
Brag about your participation in sports and choose to enjoy every second of it. Being able to balance the challenge of a full academic schedule and high-energy athletic season is an incredible feat. Once you are in the working world, you will realize how many of those skills carry with you: time management, passion for what you do, and most importantly, a support system that's always there to cheer you on.
