Alumni Profile: Charlie Mader '18 (Men's Soccer)

Welcome to the newest RWU Athletics weekly feature, Alumni Profiles. Here we will be featuring a former Roger Williams student-athlete and catching up with them on their career since graduating from RWU.

Our next entry comes from Charlie Mader. Charlie was a four-year member on the Men's Soccer team and graduated from RWU in 2018 as a Finance Major. Over the course of his career, he played in 75 games for RWU with 71 starts and helped the team qualify for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament all four years. He was a two-time All-CCC Second Team selection and finished his career with 24 points on 11 goals and two assists.

What is your current job title and what does that entail?
I am a Consumer Sales Rep at Five Star Golf Cars. I manage the sales and promotion of golf cars and utility vehicles to existing and prospect customers.

You also currently serve as an assistant coach for the RWU Men's Soccer team. What made you want to come back and coach? What are some of the differences for you personally between playing and coaching?
The year after I graduated, I first coached for Wentworth up in Boston since I was living close to their school and Coach Greenslit had connected me with them. After doing that for a year, I wanted to come back to RWU and coach for the Hawks rather than one of our rivals in conference. Coach Greenslit and I have a great relationship and when presented with the opportunity I took it right away.

I wanted to come back and coach for RWU because I love the coaching staff and players and I wanted to help be a part of winning a CCC Championship with that group. Personally my playing and coaching style are very similar; I always try and motivate the team to perform at their best whether it is in practice or in a game and that was the same when I was a player.

What would you say were your greatest athletic and academic accomplishments during your time at RWU?
My greatest athletic accomplishment is being named a captain my sophomore year; that taught me a lot of leadership skills and values that I still use today. My greatest academic accomplishment is being a part of the CAFE (Center for Advanced Financial Education) group the summer before my senior year.

Why did you choose to attend RWU?
I choose to attend RWU because of the great business school, the atmosphere of the soccer team, and the location.

What is your most fond memory of RWU Athletics?
Scoring twice on Senior Night.

Were you involved in any extracurricular activities outside of athletics?
I was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in my junior year and played many intramural sports.

What piece of advice would you have for current RWU student-athletes?
Always work hard and push your teammates to become better and they will do the same for you. College sports are a lot of fun and unfortunately it only last for four years, so make the most out of it and don't hold anything back.
