How It Happened
It was the Bison who jumped on the board right away in this one in the second minute of play. Grace Killman (Medway, Mass.) and Ariana Owen (Little Compton, R.I.) ran a little give-and-go play that opened up Killman slicing behind a Hawks defender. This led to a one-on-one against
Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Mass.) who came out to try and make a play, but Killman beat her with a shot into the bottom left side of the net. It was the fifth goal of the season for Killman.
Roger Williams kept the pressure on but did not break through until the 36
th minute.
Sarina Olson (Bristol, R.I) chipped in a really good pass from the right side of the pitch, finding
Ariana Montero (Milford, Conn.) off the right post about ten yards away. She took a tough, right-footed shot and tucked it into the left side of the goal for the equalizer. It was the fourth goal of the season for Montero.
The Hawks jumped in front with just 30 seconds remaining before the half. Olson sent another great feed in from the right sideline and found
Jordin Comstock (East Granby, Conn.) just beyond the 18-yard box straight away. She created space by moving to her left then fired a shot with her left foot back across the box and into the left side of the net for the go-ahead score and her first collegiate goal.
In the first half, RWU created more scoring chances than the Bison and wound up outshooting them, 10-6, taking more shots on goal, 7-3, and received the only corner kick of the half.
Roger Williams added an insurance tally in the 57
th minute.
Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) got the ball on the left side of the box and sent a perfect pass between two defenders and
Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I) took care of the rest. She beat the defenders to the ball and then slipped a shot between the legs of a charging Adie Hughes (Hampden, Maine) to add to the advantage.
Robbins tacked on another one in the 67
th minute. Roger Williams got a corner kick and Olson popped a high, arching ball to the top of the 18-yard box straight away. There it found the head of
Raffaella Brunetti (North Providence, R.I.) who headed it towards the net. During the balls' travels, Robbins caught a piece of it with a header of her own to score her second goal of the game and team-best 14
th of the season.
The RWU defense locked down in the second half allowing no shots on goal in the frame while the offense kept doing its' thing with ten shots.
Overall, the Hawks outshot Nichols, 20-9, had more shots on goal, 14-3, and received more corner kicks, 3-1.
Coach's Corner
If you are not totally switched on and not 100% in the zone, you can get hurt and it can be hard to recover. We did not find our shape, organization or communication in the first couple of minutes and so we deserved to be punished. Sixty seconds earlier we could have scored first and be in complete control of the game, instead we gave ourselves a battle and they had something to play for with the lead.
It knocked us back for a while, but then we came to terms with the grass pitch and remembered it is still the same game and we can play well when called upon. We remembered to pass and move, we remembered to get the ball forward into the danger area. So, eventually we went from a goal down to a goal up by half time.
At the break we changed a few things around, took stock of what had happened, we addressed the reasons that needed to be talked about so we did not make the same mistake twice. We settled into the second half and were more composed on the ball, with patience, and not to rush into areas that would see us turn the ball over. We did a better job with game management and realized that we controlled the tempo and the ball with the scoreline in our favor. If we continued to stretch the pitch out from front to back and side to side, we would create opportunities.
The second half was much better, and we ended up with a scoreline that reflected the application of the situation as much as the performance. We were worth the win and did what we needed to do at this point in the season.
