How It Happened
Wentworth got kills by Helen Barthe (Blythewood, S.C.) and Lauren Edmiston (Hockessin, Del.) to open the game before
Kristen Dansereau (Killingworth, Conn.) and
Tori Melanson (North Attleboro, Mass.) logged kills of their own for RWU. The opening of the match saw the two sides trade points back and forth before a pair of kills by
Katherine Pickard (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and
Jasmine Babbitt (Charlestown, R.I.) broke a 7-all tie. Those points helped RWU kickstart a 9-2 run for the Hawks. That cushion would help RWU towards a 25-18 win in the set.
In the second set, the game was close early on until a 7-1 run by Roger Williams helped break a 4-4 tie. Melanson and Pickard were responsible for two points each over the stretch. From there, it would be all Roger Williams as the Hawks hit .344 in the set (12-1-32) compared to only .105 for the Leopards (12-8-38). RWU rolled to the 2-0 lead with a 25-17 win.
The third set began similar to the first, with RWU and Wentworth going point for point. Wentworth managed to grab a slim three-point lead off of a pair of RWU attack errors and an Ashley Cao (Morrisville, N.C.) ace. Roger Williams responded by taking eight of the next nine points to go up 15-11. Wentworth pulled back in the set late, making it 18-17, but a slew of Wentworth miscues helped tilt the match in RWU's favor. The Leopards committed four attack errors and one service error over the final eight points to allow RWU to take the match 25-18.
