How It Happened
The Gulls fired a flurry of shots early in the contest taking nine over the first 20 minutes of the match, including four on frame, this coming against just two shots for Roger Williams. However, it looked as though the Hawks were beginning to turn things in their favor until the 30
th minute. A Gull got tripped up in the box resulting in a penalty called against RWU and a penalty kick for the hosts. They turned to Jaymie Caponigro who went to the bottom left corner of the net for the opening score, her second of the season.
The PK goal would be the only score in the first half that saw the Gulls control the attack, outshooting RWU 13-4, firing more shots on goal, 5-1, and holding the edge in corner kicks, 3-2.
The Hawks turned the tables early in the second half and were much more effective at applying pressure offensively, and as a result they finally broke through in the 56
th minute.
Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) controlled the ball beyond the 18-yard box and tried spinning off the defender to her right. The defender cut her off, but she was able to come back to her left, close the gap, and slip a through pass to
Kelly Yadoff (Wyckoff, N.J.) off the left post from about ten yards away. Yadoff had enough space to be able to get a shot off and she chipped it past the keeper and into the right side of the net to even the score. It was her second of the season.
From there it was all Endicott. The hosts retook the lead in the 75
th minute. Roger Williams was called for a penalty from about 30 yards away, Hannah Lederman chipped her free kick in to a mass of players and it found its way to Grace Jewett in the left side of the box. She sent her pass across to the weak side to a waiting Alexandra Dostie who went to the bottom left corner for the go-ahead score, her second of the season.
The Gulls added some insurance in the 78
th minute of play, Megan Smith sent a pass to Jewett on the left side. She battled through the RWU defender to get a one-on-one against
Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.). Jewett's shot deflected off McCutcheon's hands and into the right side of the goal. It was Jewett's first of the season and made the score, 3-1.
Overall, Endicott outpaced the Hawks in shots, 20-9, shots on goal, 7-3, and corner kicks, 3-2. Additionally, RWU was called for more fouls, 10-5.
Coach's Corner
Not our best performance of the season, and because of that we did not put ourselves in a position to win the match. In conference play, against a well-coached team with good players you have to perform close to your maximum ability to get a positive result and we did not do that.
If we concede three goals, it is always difficult to win a game and pick up points, which we need to do if you want to stay at the top end of the table. It is important to score first and play with a lead, rather than chase a game.
We got back into it and tied it up, but then did not move on to the next level or find that next gear that was needed. The game was a little to open and we did not control the ball and the tempo like we believe we can. We had spells in the game when it looked like we were going to break out, but it was not enough.
We did okay, but okay is not good enough when you are competing for a conference championship. With so many young players in the team without very many big games to remember what it is like, today was a wake-up call. Going forward we have something to dive us forward and a memory of what it takes.
We have the players to compete, we have the players to get the results we are looking for, but on a day when that is not the case, we must learn to be a solid unit, play, and make good decisions that will not result in giving up goals. Understanding there is nothing wrong with a nil-nil match. Sometimes we need to remember when we kickoff, the scores are level, and it is okay for the game to end that way as well. The good side or silver lining today is it was not our best performance, and we can do better.
We can do better in the attacking phase of the game, we can defend better, so on another day, perhaps the result will be better too. We feel there is more to come from this group of players, and that we have the time to make these adjustments and improvements.
