Yesterday we posted a statement before we had gathered all the facts regarding an allegation that students observing a field hockey game on Wednesday evening shouted racial epithets at an opposing team player. While we do know that the students were not conducting themselves in the spirit of respect we expect to be given to our student-athletes and visiting teams, we cannot confirm at this time that racial epithets were used by students during the game.

RWU Athletics has spoken with the Athletic Director at the other institution and no concerns have been shared with that official on behalf of players and coaches. We have requested that the AD speak directly with that coach and the visiting team and are awaiting further communication. RWU Athletics will be meeting with the students (who were removed from the game before overtime began), staff present at the game, and discussing the incident in question and the students behavior. We will conduct a full investigation and want to strongly affirm that RWU and the Athletics Department will not condone racist or harassing acts by our students or employees.
