How It Happened
The first set was close early on, with the Hawks holding a 9-7 edge before RWU buried Curry. With
Olivia Turcotte (South Kingstown, R.I.) and
Tori Melanson (North Attleboro, Mass.) serving, Roger Williams went on a 12-1 stretch to run away with the set and despite the Colonels putting together a few points, the guests ran away with the first frame, 25-14.
Â
The key of the first stanza was the superior hitting that the Hawks showcased as they hit at a .207 rate in the set against Curry's -.129.
Â
Curry hung around well into the second set. RWU jumped out to a 14-9 advantage, but the hosts cut it to 15-13 with a 4-1 run before the service game came into play. Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) committed a service error before an ace by
Jaime Gaffga (Mattituck, N.Y.) that sparked a four-point streak by the Hawks to create some distance, and they never looked back, taking the set, 25-18.
Â
The Colonels stayed close in the set by limiting their errors. They still committed five attacking errors but also had ten kills along the way. RWU on the other hand stayed consistent with 11 kills and four errors on the attack, the same number they had in the first frame.
Â
Roger Williams jumped out to a quick 5-1 advantage in the third set but did not really pull away until they had a 12-8 edge. From there, with
Kate Porter (Killingworth, Conn.),
Hailey Davis (Barrington, N.H.), and Gaffga serving, they went on a 10-2 stretch to pull away and eventually won the set, 25-16.
Â
The Hawks hit at a robust .387 clip in the set against just .053 for Curry, and overall RWU out-hit the hosts .253-.026.
