Welcome to the newest RWU Athletics weekly feature, Alumni Profiles. Here we will be featuring a former Roger Williams student-athlete and catching up with them on their career since graduating from RWU.
Â
Our next entry comes from
Hannah Pirez. Hannah was a four-year member of the Softball team and a three-year member of the Women's Basketball team. She graduated from RWU in 2012 with a Major in Business Management and a Minor in Architecture.
Â
As a member of the softball team, Hannah was a three-time All-CCC player and holds school records for most career home runs (28) and career total bases (314). She also finished her tenure at RWU among the top ten in program history in slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, walks, and runs batted in. As a member of the women's basketball team, she finished her career with 213 points, 88 rebounds, 56 assists, and 40 steals in 67 games played. In her junior year, she helped the team advance to the CCC Semifinals for the first time in ten seasons.
 Â
What is your current job title and what does that entail?
I am a Construction Project Manager for Callahan, Inc. My main responsibility is to complete the construction project in strict accordance with the construction/contract documents within the project schedule. I am responsible to manage the project team and be the driver to complete the project on schedule and within budget throughout the entire duration of the project. Another important aspect of my responsibilities would be to manage and build client and subcontractor relationships to not only have a successful project, but future projects as well.
Â
How did your athletic involvement at RWU help you in the path that you chose following graduation?
After graduation I knew my career would lead me to a profession that was team-based. The comradery and relationships that I experienced with each team was something I knew I wanted to emulate in whatever profession I decided to pursue after graduation. The construction industry is a very team-driven industry as the office and field teams have to work very closely and build tremendous trust in order to have a successful project.
Â
What would you say were your greatest athletic and academic accomplishments during your time at RWU?
My greatest athletic accomplishment was the experience of being a two-sport athlete. Having that experience of being a part of two different teams was something I will always cherish and the memories made with each person and coach.
Â
If I had to pick one academic accomplishment that I still smile about today, it would be that I got a higher grade than my significant other Natasha Sopchak in our senior seminar class. To this day I still have bragging rights that I was able to beat her and trust me I make sure to remind her of that win often.
Â
Why did you choose to attend RWU?
Honestly, I only applied to one University and was blessed to be accepted. I knew I wanted to play sports and study architecture close to home. With those "must-haves" that left RWU and Wentworth. It took one drive by campus to know this was the place I wanted to go.
Â
What is your most fond memory of RWU Athletics?
For softball, my most fond memory was our last home game in senior year. We were down by one run against Wheaton. I led off with a homerun and then a fellow senior Erica Castro hit a homerun to win the game. It was a great way to end a career on our home field going back-to-back.
Â
For basketball, it definitely was senior day. It was a special day as the entire RWU Athletics Community came out to support fellow senior
Ryan Weekes who was battling cancer. It was an amazing moment of unity seeing everyone wearing purple to support Ryan in her battle. To add to the moment, we went on to beat Salve Regina who was the eventual CCC Champion for that season.
Â
Were you involved in any extracurricular activities outside of athletics?
I was also a part of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Â
What piece of advice would you have for current RWU student-athletes?
I would tell current student-athletes to live in the moment. Enjoy the practices, Saturday nights with the team, the bus rides to games and the feeling of accomplishing something together because those are the memories you will look back on and smile.
