BRISTOL, R.I. – After downing Nichols in the CCC Semifinals, the Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team are one win away from its first Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship in ten year. Standing in their way is Wentworth Institute of Technology, the top seed of Pod B.
For The Hawks
Roger Williams enters the championship at a perfect 9-0 after downing the second-seeded Bison 5-3 in the CCC Semifinals. Yesterday's match marked the first time all season that a Hawk opponent has won more than two sets in a match.
Saturday's match against Wentworth will be first time that Roger Williams has advanced to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship since 2016. That season, Nichols took down RWU 5-3 to win the conference title.
Roger Williams seeks to clinch its first CCC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth since 2011. The Hawks earned a 5-1 victory over Nichols that year to win their second conference title in program history while making their way to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Pacing the way for RWU will be
Jon Trevethan (Berlin, Conn.) and
Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.), who both hold 9-0 records at singles play this season with Trevethan at the #1 flight and Tocco at #2. The two also compete together as a #1 doubles pairing where they also have compiled a 9-0 record.
For The Leopards
The Wentworth have enjoyed a strong season, going into the championship with a 7-3 record and winning 54 of their 88 sets. Wentworth is currently on a three-match winning streak, including a 5-2 victory over second-seeded Gordon in the other CCC Semifinal Matchup.
The Leopards are looking for their first CCC Championship since the 1990 season and third overall in program history. This will be Wentworth's first-ever appearance in the CCC Championship Match.
Helping to lead the Leopards to the conference title are Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.) and Kevin Salomon (West Newtown, Mass.). Maus plays primarily at #4 singles for Wentworth where he has amassed an 8-0 record at that flight, while Salomon is 7-1 overall on the season, with all matched played at #3 singles.
Previous Meetings
The Hawks have not faced off against the Leopards since the 2018-19 season. Roger Williams came away with a 9-0 victory over Wentworth. Roger Williams has had Wentworth's number in the past, as RWU holds a 30-1 all-time advantage over the Leopards, including a 20-match winning streak dating back to 2000.
