WATERVILLE, Maine – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team defeated Westfield State University 18-13 Sunday afternoon to earn its first NCAA Tournament win in program history.

How It Happened
Similar to the Hawks' play all season long, Roger Williams jumped out to an early lead and maintained the advantage throughout the rest of the contest.
Ryleigh Cavanaugh scored for the Hawks in the first four minutes of play. Her tally would be followed up by scores from
Lily Cunningham,
Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine), and
Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) in a two-minute stretch to put RWU up by four.
Sam Donohoe ended the Hawk run with a goal for Westfield State, yet the Hawks responded with five unanswered goals for a 9-1 lead. The Owls managed to get two goals back, but Roger Williams ended the half with a pair of goals in the final minute of play to take a 12-3 lead going into half time.
Westfield State began the period with a pair of goals while holding RWU without a goal in the first seven minutes.
Ryleigh Cavanaugh would end the drought at the 22:04 mark to help kick start a 3-0 Hawk run. Donohoe would score a pair of goals for Westfield State before RWU pulled off three more goals for an 18-7 lead with 15 minutes left to play.
In the final 11 minutes, Westfield State's offense began to come to life. The Owls ended the game with six unanswered goals while holding the Hawks scoreless over that stretch. The Owls managed to score five straight over a five-minute run to pull within six with 6:06 left to play. However, RWU was able to hold the Owls to only one more goal over the final six minutes to hold on for the NCAA Tournament win.
