Women’s Soccer Falters In Defensive Affair To SUNY Potsdam

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team suffered their first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to SUNY Potsdam at the New England College Classic at Don Melander Field on the campus of New England College on Saturday. The Hawks outshot the Bears, but it was SUNY Potsdam who took advantage scoring the lone goal of the contest.

With the loss, Roger Williams drops to 4-1 on the season while the Bears improve to 4-1.

The lone goal of the tightly fought contest came in the 82nd minute by Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y.) who recorded the first goal against the Hawks thus far this season.

In net, it was Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) who made three saves but also surrendered the lone tally falling to 2-1 on the year in net. Chloe Gordon (Cicero, N.Y.) made seven saves in a shutout effort for the Bears to improve to 1-1 on the campaign.

How It Happened
This one stayed scoreless for much of the game, but it was not due to a lack of shots. In the first half, the Hawks outshot the Bears 8-5, but only had one shot on frame against a pair for SUNY Potsdam.

This trend continued into the second half of play but this time with Roger Williams having more scoring opportunities. The Hawks took 13 shots in the second half and six on goal but Chloe Gordon (Cicero, N.Y.) was strong, stopping them all. The Bears only had three shots in the period, but with two on net.

It remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y.) netted her third goal of the year to give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish.

Coach's Corner
We created more opportunities than we needed to win a game of soccer, however we ended up on the wrong side of the result. Had we taken our chances early and often it would have been another good performance with plenty of positives and a job well done.

But in the end, we took nothing from the game. This should motivate us to be better at practice, and take nothing for granted in the future. In ten seconds, we went from a team that was full of promise, undefeated, and breaking records to just another team in the pack.

It was extremely disappointing not to win, or even draw the game, but to give up a goal and the momentum that comes with that will slow down this wave of enjoyment we were riding. Our game on Tuesday is now a big test, we will find out if we are going to be a top team or just making up the numbers.

We have the players to achieve great things, today in this match we didn't have the skill in the final third to make the difference. Then we let ourselves down by switching off and giving up our first goal against of the season. Today's game is a good lesson for all of us.

We need to take our rest day tomorrow to refocus, re-energize and recover so that we can be ready for the next challenge.

What's Next
The Hawks have a few off days before traveling to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a showdown against the Engineers on Tuesday night. Start time is set for 4:00 PM.
