Women’s Soccer Struggles To Find Traction Against MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team could not get back on track and were dispatched by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 4-0 at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers dominated the ball outshooting the Hawks 18 to four including ten to one in shots on goal as RWU was held scoreless for the second straight game.

With the defeat, Roger Williams drops their second consecutive contest after beginning the season with four straight wins, and in the process fall to 4-2-0 on the season. Meanwhile, MIT remains undefeated, improving to 5-0-1.

The Engineers employed a balanced offensive attack resulting in four goals and three assists, each being recorded by a different player.

In goal, MIT started Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.), she earned her third win in as many tries to this point on the season making one save along the way. Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) played the final 12 minutes for the Engineers but did not face a shot.

For the Hawks, Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) saw her streak of 135 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to start the season snapped in the game as she surrendered four scores but also made six saves and took her first loss on the season to fall to 2-1-0.

How It Happened
In the ninth minute of action, the Engineers opened the scoring. MIT got a corner kick that Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) took and placed perfectly off the far post. There, it found the head of Kayla Villa (St. Charles, Ill.) who redirected it to the right side of the goal. Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) managed to get a piece of the ball but did not get enough of it to keep it out of the net as it deflected off her hand into the right side of the goal.

That was the lone tally in the first half but MIT outshot RWU 8-3 and had more shots on goal, 5-1. In addition, they received nine corner kicks in the half and capitalized on one of them for the lone score of the frame.

MIT put this one out of reach in the 62nd minute with a pair of scores. First, after clearing the ball down the left sideline, Megan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) brought the ball up and after crossing over a defender, found space for a shot from straight away around 15-yards out. Once again, McCutcheon managed to get a hand on it, but it went up and off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net.

The Engineers second score of the 62nd minute came courtesy of Stephanie Howe (Geneva, Ill.). This time, Kaitlin Zareno (Montebello, Calif.) forced a centering pass between the legs of a Hawks defender and found Howe. She was free from about five yards away and fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal for the score.

MIT finalized the scoring in the 72nd minute. After RWU committed a foul deep in their defensive territory, the Engineers got a free kick from a good spot from around 25 yards away on the left side. Emma Rutherford (Nashville, Tenn.) used this chance to send a crossing pass to the left post where Ceci Munoz (Maplewood, N.J.) got a foot on it and tipped it into the net.

The Engineers dominated the ball and maintained pressure for almost the entirety of the game, and that is reflected in the box score as they had more shots, 18-4, shots on goal, 10-1, and corner kicks, 12-1.

Coach's Corner
Despite the result, we can take many positives from tonight's game, knowing we are not a long way off from being a good team with much to offer this season. You could see the effort from the players to compete and work hard all over the pitch. If we can do better with set pieces when we have the ball and be more responsible when we do not, that in itself, will help us turn a game like this around.

We are learning to control the tempo of the game when in possession of the ball, but also how to control the game when the other team has it.

Sometimes you strike quickly and play from ahead, while other times you must pick your battles, just retain the ball, and use this time to organize, get your shape and remember the game plan. When we can understand as a group what areas are best to win the ball back and where to expose the other team, we will take that next step in our development.

We tried a few different looks against our opponent to see what works for us, but also what would work against them.

This game perhaps came a couple of weeks too early, so hopefully we can get to play again at the end of the season when we have a healthy squad that is match fit and more experienced.

Overall, it was a good match, a good learning environment and an eye opener for us all.

What's Next
The Hawks look to get back in the win column as they open Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a matchup against Wentworth on Friday, September 17th. Start time is slated for 7:00 PM.
