Oster Nets Pair As Women’s Soccer Gets Back In Win Column In CCC Opener

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Under the lights at Bayside Field, it was freshman Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) who shined brightest, scoring a pair of goals for the number-six regionally ranked Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team, as they opened Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 4-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday night. Oster netted the first two goals of her career to back Morgan McCutcheon's (Danbury, Conn.) shutout effort in the victory.

With the win, the Hawks snap their brief two-game losing streak, improving to 5-2-0, 1-0-0 against CCC competition. On the other side, for Wentworth, their first win of the season remains elusive, falling to 0-5-1 on the campaign and 0-1-0 in CCC play.

In addition to Oster's scoring outburst, Roger Williams also got scores from Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) and Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) as the team broke out offensively after getting shutout in their two previous games.

McCutcheon continued her strong play in net this season, making three saves in her second shutout of the year and improved to 3-1-0 in goal for the Hawks. Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.) started in goal for the Leopards and made nine saves but also allowed a quartet of scores to fall to 0-3-0 on the campaign.

How It Happened
The Hawks got their first goal in the sixth minute thanks to some terrific defensive pressure. The Leopards had possession in their defensive zone before Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) pressured the Wentworth defender and blocked a pass that would have cleared the ball. The deflection went loose in front of the goal and Oster was rewarded for her efforts by getting a one-on-one chance against the keeper from the right side of the 18-yard box. She went low and to the left to score her first career goal.

It took just 59 seconds for Roger Williams to tally another one. After a brief injury delay, Jordin Comstock (East Granby, Conn.) brought the ball up the right side and fired a shot from the left side of the six-yard box. Her shot was saved but Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) was right there to mop up the mess, now with a wide-open net, and she scored into the bottom right corner of the goal. It was her eighth of the season.

RWU took a whopping 16 shots in the first half, including nine on goal while the Leopards managed just four shots with one on frame.

Roger Williams tacked on another one in the 71st minute. Once again, they had a shot saved, this time off the foot of Oster. But the Hawks had a player in position for the put back and in this instance, Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) was the beneficiary scoring her third goal of the season.

The Hawks got one more in the 74th minute thanks to some good fortune. Oster brought the ball down the left sideline and fired what appeared to be a crossing pass. However, the ball just kept carrying and Wentworth goalie Juliana Heaton (Swansea, Mass.) misjudged it and it hit off her hands and into the net for Oster's second score of the contest.

RWU dominated the ball from wire-to-wire outshooting the Leopards, 22-7, had more shots on goal, 13-3, and more corner kicks, 4-0.

Coach's Corner
This is where the season really begins. We are gradually getting back to full strength and even though we have a few injuries, the players that got on the pitch delivered.

It was important to make a statement to the rest of the league that we are capable of winning games not only in our region, but also in our conference. We are here to compete, especially at home, on our own pitch.

In any match four nil is a great score line, and we did that with time and effort to spare. We probably created enough opportunities to score that in the first half of the match.

We were able to rotate the players, get minutes to squad players that deserved it and were able to reward them because of their effort and attitude in practice this week that they have all shown.

Playing the first game on a Friday night was special, we had an excellent crowd and they got behind us after a quality attacking display in the first 20 minutes in which we controlled the game.

The fans gave us energy and in return we had a good performance and a good result. We did our part tonight, and now we need to play with the same passion and confidence in all the other games we have coming up next week and till the end of the season.

If we continue to progress, and our squad becomes stronger, we are going to be in the thick of things come the playoffs. However, it is important we take and play one game at a time.
