Women’s Soccer Claims Sixth Spot In Opening USC Regional Poll

BRISTOL, R.I. – In the initial United Soccer Coaches (USC) Regional Rankings of the 2021 season, the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team was ranked sixth in Region II, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Hawks have come blazing out of the gate to open the season, and at the time of the ranking, the team stood at 4-1-0 on the year.

Roger Williams dominated the competition across their first four contests by starting the season 4-0-0 for the first time since 2013. The team did not allow a goal in any of those games, and their four shutouts to open the campaign was a feat the program had never accomplished prior.

They finally allowed a goal in their loss to SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, but they had shown enough to earn a spot in the regional rankings.

"We are very happy with how we have performed overall during the first two weeks of the season." Head Coach Tim Moody said. Although, we feel we could have done better and been undefeated going into our matchup against MIT, the top ranked team in the region and seventh ranked team in the nation."

The Hawks have gotten steady production from veterans and newcomers alike thus far in their return to the pitch following the cancellation of their 2020 campaign. Junior Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) already has seven goals on the campaign to lead the squad while freshman Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) has tallied four assists. Meanwhile, RWU has received rock solid goaltending from the trio of Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.), Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.), and Sami Brody (Clinton, Mass.) as they have combined to only surrender a single goal across the first five games of the season.

"Like so many other programs, we have not played as many matches as would have liked over the last two years, so it is just nice to be back out there and playing," Moody said. "With that being said, our next step is increase that enjoyment by winning more games, by playing at a higher level, and elevating ourselves to compete with the elite programs in the country."

"We are not the finished product yet," Moody added. "But we promise to improve and be in strong position by the time the playoffs come around. We have been regionally ranked and nationally ranked before. This is nothing new to us. But it is still appreciated, and it is important to live up to the hype and expectations we put upon ourselves as a team, a program, and our Hawk family."
