MILTON, Mass. – Four different players recorded three or more points for the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team, as they cruised to a 6-1 win over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Curry College on Saturday at Walter M. Katz Field.
Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a pair of goals for the first multi-goal performance of her career, while
Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.),
Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.), and
Kelly Yadoff (Wyckoff, N.J.) each recorded one goal and one assist to back another strong defensive outing in the Hawks victory.
With the win, RWU improves to 6-3-0 on the season, 2-0-0 against CCC opponents. Meanwhile, the Colonels fall to 3-5-0, 0-2-0 in conference play.
The six goals scored by the Hawks matches their second highest mark thus far this season and is the most goals the team has recorded in a conference matchup since they had the same amount against Eastern Nazarene in 2017.
Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) maintained her strong stretch of play to start the season in goal for the Hawks, allowing a single goal while making four saves to earn the win and improve to 4-1-0 in net.
For the Colonels, Stella Schofield (Marshfield, Mass.) got the start and had a tough time against the onslaught of shots taken by RWU. She played the first half and allowed four goals while securing five saves and fell to 3-4-0 on the season. Hannah Correa (Carver, Mass.) handled the second half and allowed two goals and made one save for Curry.

How It Happened
Roger Williams jumped on the board early and often in this one, beginning in the tenth minute.
Mollie Feldman (Highland Falls, N.Y.) sent a long through pass up the field to
Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) who collected the ball on the right side of the box. She spun of the defender and took a shot that was saved. However, the rebound remained lose and
Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) was in position to mop up the mess for her fifth score of the season.
The Hawks added another one in the 14
th minute.
Maggie Hickey (Greenville, R.I.) fed the ball to Robbins from a similar spot as her prior shot that was saved, around the top right intersection of the 18-yard box. She once again spun off the defender but the result was different this time, as she sent a rocket into the top left corner of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
Curry got one back in the 23
rd minute. Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) took a shot from the right side, across the box that was saved by
Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.). The rebound took a favorable bounce for the Bison as it rolled to the weak side where Maddie Resendes (Coventry, R.I.) was waiting, and she snuck a shot past the recovering McCutcheon to the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
RWU regained their two-goal advantage in the 38
th minute.
Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) dashed down the left sideline to corral the ball deep in the Curry zone before turning to bring the ball along the goal line. She then saw an opportunity to cross the ball into the box where
Kelly Yadoff (Wyckoff, N.J.) was waiting on the weak side, and she went to the low right side for her first goal of the season.
Oster scored a goal of her own a few minutes later. A similar sequence occurred as Oster turned on the jets to beat a defender down the left side. This time she turned the corner and found herself with a one-on-one chance against Bison goalie Stella Schofield (Marshfield, Mass.). She took a shot from the low-left portion of the six-yard box and slipped it past Schofield for her third goal of the season in the 42
nd minute.
Both teams had their opportunities to score in the first half, but it was Roger Williams who took advantage of more of them. The Hawks outshot the Colonels 13-7 in the frame, including 9-4 in shots on goal.
Despite having the match well in hand, RWU extended their advantage in the second half, with their first insurance tally coming in the 75
th minute. The Hawks received a free kick from straight away and about 44 yards out that was taken by
Grace Kelly (Milford, N.H.). She went for the net with her free kick, but the ball clanged off the crossbar. However, for the second time in the contest, Yucius found herself in the right place at the right time and she was able to head home the ricochet for her second score of the game
Roger Williams wrapped up the scoring in the 83
rd minute of action.
Sammy Jost (Ringwood, N.J.) sent a long pass downfield that gave the Hawks a breakaway chance. Yadoff ran it down and sent a pass across to
Sabrina Sherman (Brentwood, N.H.) who received it in deep with a one-on-one chance against the keeper. She then chipped it over the GK for her second goal of the season.
RWU finished with the distinct advantage in scoring chances then the hosts, finishing with more shots, 23-13, shots on goal, 12-5, and corner kicks, 5-2. And as a result, they claimed the 6-1 victory and their 17
th win in their last 18 meetings against the Colonels.
Coach's Corner
It was a strange game. When you look back or only see the score line, you must think we were at our best, but we were far from it. In fact, we actually played and performed much better in our game against WPI on Wednesday, especially if you take away a few individual mistakes.
Today we were a little messy with the ball and did not do the basics very well. A few individual moments made the game look like we did great. Do not get me wrong, I will take a 6-1 result every time we play until the end of the season. But, I want us to be on our game and be sharp, be fined tuned in all areas, which we did not do consistently enough.
We have talented players who have potential, who in the past against average opposition found it easy and did not really need try very hard. At the lower level, individual skills can win you games once and a while as well, but to do it on a regular basis it has to be a collective effort. You need to understand your role on the team and how that inter-links with other positions or roles other teammates have to perform.
Soccer is a team sport and played well is no doubt a beautiful game. We are still getting to know each other at practice and in games which explains the inconsistent performance so far this season. We are making progress everyday, however sometimes you don't make the correct pass or take the best option when shooting in front of the goal or crossing into the box.
Progress is not a straight line, you cannot just click your fingers and things happen. It takes time and we need to get back on the practice pitch and work through these ups and downs. We probably have more questions than answers right now but we are moving in the right direction.
We are in good place for now, but we expect to be in a better place in three or four weeks down the road.
