Women’s Soccer Uses Pair Of Second Half Goals To Outlast Bridgewater State

Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Grace Kelly (Milford, N.H.) scored off a free kick in the 54th minute to break a scoreless tie and help lift the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over Bridgewater State University at Swenson Field on Wednesday night. Ariana Montero (Milford, Conn.) added an insurance tally to back Morgan McCutcheon's (Danbury, Conn.) third shutout of the season.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 7-3 (2-0 CCC) on the season and have now beaten the Bears in eight of their last nine matchups. Meanwhile, Bridgewater State falls to 3-4 (1-0 MASCAC).

For Kelly, it was her first career collegiate goal for RWU, and she has recorded a point in back-to-back contests after recording an assist against Curry on Saturday.

McCutcheon was strong in net for the Hawks making five saves which matches the second-most she has recorded in a shutout in her career. She improved to 5-1 in goal for the Hawks. Tori Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) got the start and surrendered a pair of goals while making two saves and in the process fell to 3-4 on the season. Emma Stanlewicz (West Suffield, Conn.) relieved her late and recorded a pair of saves.

How It Happened
It was a quiet first half for both squads. The Bear outshot Roger Williams, 7-5 including in shots on goal 3-2, while also receiving the only two corner kicks of the half. The Hawks had scoring opportunities in the half with their best one coming in the 45th minute as they actually shot the ball into the net, but it was wiped off for being offsides.

RWU took control in the second half and got on the board in the 54th minute. The Hawks received a free kick following a penalty and it was placed about 26 yards away off the right post. Grace Kelly (Milford, N.H.) took her shot to the top left corner and it appeared as thought Tori Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) made the stop for a moment, but she bobbled the ball on the catch, and it crossed the goal line for the opening score of the contest.

The Hawks got some breathing room in the 59th minute of play. Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) brought the ball down the right sideline and sent a cross near the top of the 18-yard box to Ariana Montero (Milford, Conn.) who shot the ball to the bottom left. Once again, it looked like Viola Laughery had a handle on it, but she seemed to stumble a little bit, and the ball once again found its way into the goal. It was Montero's third score of the season.

In the second half, Roger Williams had more scoring opportunities as they had more shots, 8-5, shots on goal 4-2, and corner kicks, 6-3.

Coach's Corner
It was a good game for both soccer programs. We both wanted to get a positive result out of the game, as well as a good performance, and we ended up taking advantage of the opportunities that came our way.

We started very well and had two good chances to be two up within the first five minutes. It was a pretty even match for the first 45 minutes, both teams competing, probing, looking to break through the other team's defensive line. It was a good advertisement for Region II soccer.

In the second half we found another level, and went into attack mode causing them a few problems which in the end was why we found a way to get the goals we needed to win the match. We are getting goals from all over the pitch and contributions from different players.

We capitalized on two attempts on target, and perhaps could have scored more but it did not materialize, so we just shut it down to keep a clean sheet. Stopping the opposition from scoring is just as important as scoring goals. We need to be good at both ends of the pitch.

It was a good night's work from the players and coaching staff. We definitely entertained the families, friends, and fans who came out to support the Hawks tonight. We have had a pretty good and successful September.

It is great to be playing competitive games again and enjoying nights like these. We hope there are more to come.
