How It Happened
The match kicked off with a pair of kills by Wheaton's Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.). From there, the Lyons would keep the Hawks at arms' length most of the way. Wheaton built its lead to four (11-7) halfway through the set, forcing a Hawk timeout. Wheaton would eventually take a commanding 18-11 lead before coming away with a 25-20 win.
RWU came out of the gate with three straight points before taking a 5-1 lead. The Hawk lead would not last, as the Lyons used a 5-0 run to turn an 8-11 deficit into a 13-11 advantage. The turning point came late in the set when the Lyons utilized another 5-0 run to take a 20-13 lead. The Hawks managed to pull within two (20-22) on a pair of
Allie Welch (Marlborough, Conn.) kills, but Wheaton scored three of the final four points for a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the Hawks fell behind early with Wheaton scoring the first five points of the set. Compounding RWU's issues were a slew of rotation errors that gave away free points to the Lyons. Wheaton would go up 14-4 and never looked back after taking the final set 25-11
