BIDDEFORD, Maine – Sophomores Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) and Matt Bagley (Trumbull, Conn.) wasted little time staking their claims for the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team as they earned Commonwealth Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for the week of August 30^th through September 5^th, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon. Both proved to be pivotal for the Hawks in their first official collegiate action of their careers, and they played a major role for the team, despite an 0-1-2 start to the season.
 
Avellar got the starting nod in net in two games for the Hawks on opening week though his first-career win remained elusive. He did his part, allowing just one goal and making 12 saves across 220:00 minutes of action, though the team played to a pair of double-overtime ties in those contests making him 0-0-2 on the season.
 
On a truly brutal evening for goaltending, in the pouring rain on a slick and raw opening night at Emerson, Avellar seemingly was not bothered allowing only one goal while making seven saves in a 1-1 tie in double-overtime. He followed that up on Saturday with his first-career shutout, stopping five shots in a 0-0 tie against Keene State.
 
Bagley made an immediate impact offensively for the Hawks, as he scored the first two goals of his career along with an assist in last weeks action.
 
He provided the team's offense in their season-opener against Emerson last Wednesday, tallying his first career goal. He followed that up with a stand-out performance on Sunday against Hobart, scoring a second goal while assisting on another in the Hawks' three-goal afternoon.
