BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team celebrated their two seniors in a pre-match ceremony, but were unable to come out victorious, falling to Wellesley 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 20-18) and Johnson & Wales 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-14).
Before the start of the opening match against Wellesley, the Hawks'
Kristen Dansereau (Killingworth, Conn.) and
Emily Bennett (Cumberland, R.I.) were celebrated by the team for their efforts within the program and collegiate careers.
Against Wellesley,
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded 16 kills in the match, while
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) added 24 assists. Jackson also led the Hawks in digs.
Wellesley led 13-10 in the opening set, before the Blue scored five out of the next six points, to take control of the set. The Hawks then were able to cur the lead back down to three.
The Hawks then took command early in the second, jumping out to an 11-2 lead, but the Blue were able to rally to pull within one. With the score 18-17, Roger Williams scored six straight point, before closing out the set 25-20. The two squads split the next two sets, forcing a fifth.
In the fifth set, The Hawks and Blue played to a 15-15 tie, before Wellesley took a one-point lead. Roger Williams then scored two points taking the lead before Wellesley responded by doing the same. With the score 18-18, the Blue scored two straight points to close out the contest.
After dropping the first set of their second match of the day against Johnson & Wales, the Hawks had a 20-16 lead in the second set. The Wildcats rallied to score nine straight points to regain the lead, and take the set.
In the final set the Wildcats took a commanding lead early and held on to take the match.
Roger Williams (5-16, 1-4 CCC) will host Suffolk on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match at 6 pm in the Campus Rec Center. They will then travel for a Saturday, Oct. 22 match at Western New England.
