Women’s Soccer: Salve Regina Holds on to Beat Roger Williams

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team was unable to overcome a 3-1 deficit early in the match, as they fell to Salve Regina, 3-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play, Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
 
Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) made nine saves in the contest, while the Hawks outshot the Seahawks, 31-19, putting 20 shots on net. The Hawks also earned 14 corner kicks in the match.
 
The Seahawks struck in the opening minute, when Hannah Daniewicz scored at the 43 second mark, to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead. Maddie Hudson then was able to find Meagan McLaughlin, and McLaughlin then scored at the 8:04 mark of the first half, taking a 2-0 lead.
 
Sabrina Sherman (Brentwood, N.H.) then cut the Hawk deficit to one with her first goal of the season, putting the first of her five shots into the back of the net. Hudson then scored 1:25 later, when Hudson scored after Daniewicz found Hudson on a pass, that ended in the back of the net, closing out scoring in the opening 10 minutes of the match.
 
Just over 12 minutes later, Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) fired a shot that found the back of the net, cutting the match to 3-2 in favor of Salve Regina, to go into the half trailing by one.
 
In the second half Daniewicz scored 43 seconds into play in the second half, and the Hawks struck with 27 seconds remaining in the second half, when Bianca Robbins scored off a pass from Julia Robbins (Johnston, R.I.), as the Seahawks held on for the victory.
 
Roger Williams (6-9-3, 2-3-2 CCC) will travel to Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2:30 pm.  They will then conclude the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 pm on Bayside Field.
