Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team took a set from Coast Guard on Friday night, but was unable to overcome the Bears, eventually falling to the 14-5 squad 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-11, 25-20) in the Campus Rec Center.
The Hawks hit .414 in the second set, while compiling a total of 39 kills in the match, while also earning 59 digs defensively.
Kaylee Jackson led the way with double-digit kills, while
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) and
Jasmine Babbitt (Charlestown, R.I.) had eight and seven kills respectively.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) and
Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) both had 17 kills and
Rachel Borzone (Syosset, N.Y.) had 19 digs on the defensive end. Babbitt also hit .700 in the match.
The first set began with a 4-4 tie, before Coast Guard scored four straight points to take an 8-4 lead. The Bears then scored five out of six points with the game at 10-8, taking a 15-9 advantage, and expanding throughout the set.
In the second, the Hawks jumped out to a 12-8 lead, before Coast Guard scored three straight to make it a one point set. With the Hawks holding a three-point lead at 23-20, the Bears scored quickly, but the Hawks scored the next two to close out the set, leveling the match at 1-1.
Holding a four point lead, the Bears rallied for 11 straight point in the third, to take control. The Hawks battled with the Bears, with Roger Williams holding a two point deficit, but the Bears used a run to pull away as they closed the match.
Roger Williams (5-11, 1-3 CCC) will travel to UMass Boston on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a tri-match hosted by UMass Boston, where they will also play Springfield. They will then host Nichols in CCC play on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
